I have to crawl under my truck while the engine is running in order to switch gears off the tranny linkage...

I have a 2010 ranger regular cab and the column shifter is totally and completely worn the hell out. So worn that I can no longer shift from the column and now have to manually with my hand move the shift linkage coming off the Tranny. Move it through park- reverse- neutral- drive.
All the while another person has their foot held on the brake with me under the truck, happy days haha.

Is there a way to take the factory automatic column shift && convert it over to an automatic floor shift? To 100% eliminate the stock shifter.. Perhaps an available affordable conversion kit?

I've posted on other forms with this same issue however no one came forward with any information or comment which got me thinking is this even doable for starts..
I would greatly appreciate any insight +help.
Thank you

I used a B&M Quicksilver shifter when I V8 swapped my Ranger. I'm sure you can find a couple options with a little searching.

You could also swap columns or repair what you have.

I'm not switching out engines
I'm trying to go from a column shift to automatic floor shift
My column is so damn worn I don't want to bother with all the parts that would be needed in order to fix it
I'm leaning toward Just go with the floor shifter to go around all of these problems
&& Avoid the column all together, I don't know if this can even work

Yea I've been researching online but can't get anywhere
Even with a basic google or duckduckgo search for example
I'd type in "how to convert a column shifter to an automatic floor shifter 2010 ranger truck"
The search engines results would yield nothing useful or something that's entirely unrelated

The guys on this ranger station website are reputable and in the past with my first ranger had helped me fix these bitchy weirdo little problems I had successfully, so here we are again

I'm hoping this procedure isn't a wing it type of situation
I'd prefer something that comes in kit form with parts- instructions && some sort of guidance

Assuming that I can convert the column shift to an automatic floor shift..
Where can I find information on the procedure?
What does the procedure entail?
Where can I find the conversion kit?
Who makes the conversion kit?

Thanks

If you can't find information about it online, there is a good chance that it just hasn't been done or the people doing it don't document it on the internet. Floor shift conversions on a late model truck will be very few and far between.

Junkyard column and shift assembly would be my first suggestion. That will be easier and a lot less work than a floor shift conversion.

If you are dead set on a floor shifter then you need to find one with the correct number of detents for your trans. So if you have P N R OD D 2 1, you need one with 7 detents... a lot of the aftermarket shifters are made for 2 or 3 speed autos and won't work well with modern 5+ speed autos.

I wasn't suggesting you swap engines... just saying when I did my V8 swap I used a B&M floor shifter.

I just went through the Tech Library and didn't see a conversion.

Like was said above... research it... fab up what you need... DO IT.

There are some that will work I'm sure. Try Jegs... Summit... etc

"Yes, you need to match what your current shifter "window" has, i.e. P R N D 2 1 or P R N D 3 2 1 "

yes and no .... on my V8 build I am using a 321 set on a 4OD aod trans .... at the low setting i have 1-2 shift, then 3 and 4 so if you don't care about a locked 1st gear, you could try this also.

What's the worst that could happen?
Looking at the kits on Summit, it looks like a pretty straightforward install. Hardest part - once you find the right shifter - would be cutting and positioning the shift unit on the floor.

chances are all you need are new bushings. the shifting parts are a separate shaft that bolts on top of the main column assembly. not that bad of a job to replace them.
you don't take the steering wheel off, just lower the whole column. on the Ford parts site most column parts list as 2003 thru 2011.

for the conversion to a floor shifter I'd look at Mustang stuff for ideas.

I've seen the bolts that hold the arm to the back of the shifter tube loosen or fall out on a couple occasions which would cause your issue, also the bushings and straps seem to fail pretty regularly as previously mentioned.

The linkage may just have come loose like holyford said. I have caught this problem in the early stages. It’s possible to reach up under the dash to resolve it, although you’re pretty much working by feel.

Lowering the column to repair or to replace isn’t all that difficult. I helped a family friend swap columns recently and it only requires basic tools and a couple hours. The columns are largely the same from mid 90s up.

There is no floor shifter that won’t require some custom work for your truck. You have to get a universal in the right shift pattern as has been mentioned, then figure where to mount it and how to get the adjustment right. There’s not really a step by step but it can be done. It’s just not commonly done enough to these for there to be a specific kit.

You'd also lose any gauge indication of gear position with the floor shifter, if that matters to you.
