I have a '81 Honda XL250 and haven't ridden it for about 3 years for a couple reasons... one it's 6V and the rear lights don't work very well and haven't had time to clean the contacts (apparently that's most of the problem with 6V systems). But now that it's mentioned a couple times above it's scary enough some days driving a car around...

Not to mention that 250 is gutless, stock was I think 17hp... and it's heavy and has little suspension travel but is fun, I need to get it going again...
Good luck with that 6v system. Seems they were hit or miss from the factory. I gave up and built a 12v conversion for my '78 XL350.

My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
I ride a 2005 Yamaha R1. Survived the streets and highways of SoCal and LA for 15 years. The trick is to ride like everyone out there is trying to kill you. Even at stoplights, I keep it in 1st clutched and mind the mirror in case something behind me is not stopping. Splitting lanes is actually safer than flowing with the traffic. I use the ABP principle (Always Be Passing).

I ride a YZ250 2 stroke motocross bike in the dirt. Tracks are fun. Man made berms and jumps are dreamy.

Clean your room before you criticise the world.

Well I have to think, I started on a Harley 50cc almost a moped kick started forward and shifted with a clutch that moved a cable on the motor, that was all in fields. Next was a minibike for a couple of years then I graduated to a Suzuki 120 with a trans that had 2 ranges. In 72 I bought a 73 Kawasaki 350 triple 2 cycle. a year later I went up to a Kawasaki 750 triple and put 12000 miles on it and when a bearing seized I fixed it and traded it in on a 77 KZ1000 that I still have although I haven't ridden it in several years next year I'm going to try and get it back on the road. The reason I stop riding the 1000 was because we connected with some friends with motorcycles and I got a 90 Goldwing so the wife would be more comfortable, we have put about 20000 miles on it but haven't ridden much this year some of those friends have sold theirs or moved away. The other problem is the wife had both knees replaced and still has a lot of hip and back pain so she not very interested in riding even on a smooth Goldwing.

1952, first bike was a Whizzer motorbike, flat tracked a Beezer, and ended up High School with a Vincent Black Shadow. Bikes went on hold for a family til 1974.Started again with a 400 Kaw. 750 Kaw and a Yamaha XS1100.Got divorced and started again in 1980 with a new Z1R/tc. Oldest son and I got it to run 9.20. Finished up with a ZX-10, a V-MAX and a ZX-11. If I was riding off road, it was because I was in trouble, not because I wanted to be there.

Pics of my M109R and B-King. The M109R, mine is badged as a European M1800R, has aftermarket rims, the rear being a ten inch rim with a 280/35 Metzeler mounted on it.

That Yamaha Virago 1100 is a great bike. My '98 had 71K on it when it burned up 3 months ago in the Bear Fire. Just gave it new battery and Progressive shocks and had ridden it to work about a week before. Rode great solo or 2-up. Carbs are the only sore spot, as they hate to sit with gas in 'em for a long time. Use Stabil or Seafoam in the tank every few fill-ups.
Loved my '72 Yamaha R5C, a 2-stroke twin, but my wife complained that the front end got light once it made the ton.
