I'd call the tow company and advise them that they just bought a Ranger for $40k since they illegally towed it...doesn't matter if its got plates or not a temp tag says its in fact registered. No way I'd pay them $300+ for taking a vehicle they had no business touching, and how'd the tow company "damage" the front bumper during their illegal tow?

Also, looks like the dealership deleted your review...they love to do stuff like this when someone leaves a negative review catching them in a lie or other illegal shenanigan's. Not a fan of dealerships...and given you were over-charged for the vehicle I'd make a point to tell them they owe you a replacement bumper for that damage they sold to you, or they can buy the truck back.
It was towed from an apartment complex, so it's not about law but apartment policy on private property. It may have been a jerk move, but I don't see any reason to conclude that it was illegal.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

If I understand correctly, the towing had nothing to do with registration, per se. it wasn’t ordered by city, county or state. The apartment complex has a policy about towing vehicles that don’t belong. They (the apartment complex) did not know that this vehicle belonged to a resident because Jim hadn’t told them about it yet. It’s new and he and the girlfriend were greatly preoccupied with more important family business. So, the towing company towed the truck in accordance with their contract. Once it is towed, they have done their job and want to be paid what is due. The apartment complex doesn’t want to cut Jim any slack because then, the towing fee has to come out of their pocket. So, it would take an all-American generous act of kindness for the towing company to reduce/waive the bill or the apartment complex to say “Sorry. We’ll take care of it.”

So, Jim gets to pay.

Things must be different there. Cause here in TN I've had abandoned vehicles with no plates left in my driveway. Called sheriffs department and was told that nothing could be done until 48 hours from the time on the sticker they placed on the windshield. Further informed that if I called a tow truck before then, I would be charged with stealing the vehicle.

I say if they are going to delete the review maybe we should all start posting negative reviews, someone might get the message that things aren’t kosher.

As for the towing, I think that was a pretty dick move on the part of the towing company. Yes, it was a vehicle not in the system as registered to the apartment complex, but it also sports brand new temporary tags, which would indicate that perhaps someone in the complex bought a new vehicle and things haven’t been updated yet. The honest thing to do would be to not tow it immediately but perhaps say, ask the apartment complex if someone needs to update their vehicle list or monitor it for a couple days. By rights I’d think the apartment complex should have something in their agreement that you have X number of days to notify them of a new vehicle. If there is in fact such a time limit (and IMHO, there really should be), then the towing company had no business towing the truck, period.

there is a special place in hell for those "tow" drivers.
it's a shame that it's illegal to help them get there.

I've heard a story of "proficient" drivers scanning the lots at 00:01 of a place that required monthly renewal of permits, and snagging a car. he did not pull over when chased by a U-Haul truck.

the devil is in the details,,, of the rental lease.

I bought this Ranger on the 21st. My next payment was due on the 28th. I just look and see that they haven't paid it off and my payment is 6-days past due. :annoyed:

While not entirely surprised, this just keeps getting worse.

It looks like Oklahoma law states that the dealer has 7 days to pay off the trade in.

That seems odd. After all, they're selling a truck that has a lien against it for the unpaid balance of the loan.

My thought is that they didnt want to be out any $ for paying off a truck that might not sell and just sit on the lot.

If you owned it, ie payed off, would they get away with not paying you for it until they found someone to buy it? No.

That's called selling something on consignment.

Perhaps, but I doubt it's legal to sell a vehicle that has a lien on it. And, yes, because Jim took out a loan to buy the truck, there is a lien on it, taken out by the bank he borrowed the money from.
