I think this is just a matter of not reading what you're signing. Every time I've bought from a dealer, I added a solid half hour to the process cause I skim through every page put in front of me and solidly read any pages with numbers. Don't think I'm putting anyone down here tho.
And this was my point. I didn't look over the numbers. I just trusted it was the deal we had discussed. I even pointed to the $35k Ranger price asking why they couldn't come off of that to help me get to the $550 payment. I eventually agreed to pay $569.25. When I got to the finance guy it went to $570 and some change.

I didn't mind the damage to the bumper cover because I thought I was going to get a deal. Now walking out and looking at the damaged bumper cover just adds insult to injury.

Not sure at this point what I'd want them to do to make it right, or what would even be reasonable.

Probably a couple grand to fix it right.

Plot twist: build a bumper to delete it...

My credo
Crossed threads are tight threads.
Id rather hack into this thing than a pristine truck that I score from a nice dealer. I'd say its a perfect start for a build truck. But then again I am rogue.

This is why many articles and videos about purchasing vehicle mention to always negotiate the price and never get into a discussion about how much you can afford in monthly payments. If you tell them you can do $500 a month it is almost a guarantee they will make a $450 a month vehicle cost you $500 a month, or persuade you to spend just a little more by saying something like, $530 month is ONLY $30 more a month." Or, they will increase the cost of the vehicle and add a year to the loan to bring the monthly payment back down to $500, and if extending the loan out another year brings the payment below $500 they will add a 12-month oil change, filter, and 101 point inspection service plan to bring your payments back up to $500 a month.

Let me repeat myself.....never ever negotiate a vehicle purchase based on monthly payments. I think every consumer program, every car enthusiast program on television, every auto magazine, and that section about cars that newspapers used to publish every Saturday has mentioned this over and over. Unfortunately, these things aren't in front of consumers like they used to be and it doesn't take long for consumers to forget about sales tactics and manipulation. This is also the reason so many of these publications recommended getting pre-approved financing through your bank or credit union and making sure the sales people at the dealership are aware of this. They will still try to get you to use their financing, but if you are firm about it they will back down and just try to sell the vehicle.

Another thought: An article about this in the Tech Library might help someone avoid this mistake in the future. This is really something that should be in the resources section of an automotive forum.

And this is how they get $15,000 over MSRP. $15,000 is a lot, but at $84 a month it doesn't seem like that much if it is spread out over a 7 year loan. And if you don't watch them they will add something to make it come to $99 a month and tell you it's still less than $100 a month extra.

When I trade I get the KBB value of my F-150, see what my trade is selling for on Auto Trader, and get the KBB value of the used vehicle I'm buying.

Here's the KBB for the F-150 based on my VIN and mileage:

Here is the KBB for the Ranger:

Screenshot_20220924-101139_Chrome.jpg

There was room for them to give me the $24k I owed on the F-150, and even taken some money off of the price of the Ranger.

I offered to take the Ranger as is (hadn't been cleaned or touched at all) and pay their asking price if they would have paid off the F-150. There was definitely room to make a deal we both would have been happy with.
