HP Tuners

Has anyone ever screwed around with HP Tuners on a 4.0 SOHC? I've got the software and tried to pull the OEM info. I got an error that said to send the file to HP Tuners for them to look at.

I actually bought the package to work with LS engines, but figured I might play around with the Ranger too, since I'm just learning anyway.

I know I've seen bobby talk about them... but he hasn't been here for a minute or two.

I think there is more to be had in one of these SOHC engines... I was certainly planning on following along.

I'm sure you can get more out of all these engines even just playing with tuning, but probably not a whole lot. They're normally aspirated engines with fixed cam timing, and once they're running in feedback on the O2 sensor about all you can change is the spark timing. To get these engines to make significantly more power is going to require more flow, and you can't do that with code. Tuners on more modern engines are playing with things like turbo boost where the hardware for more flow is already there, they just have to change how it is used.

The SOHC engine may have nicer port shapes thanks to removing the pushrods, but it gained nothing else in the change to OHC - 2 valves per cylinder all lined up in a row, without even the small angle of the pushrod 3.0. The SOHC is making decent power already given what it is.

Well, one reason I figured I'd play with the tuning is because I'm considering the ModdBox supercharger kit (already have the M90). The base setup doesn't actually require tuning, but adding more than 3.5 psi does.

Maybe I should poke around on some Mustang forums. I don't think they had the 4.0 in 2001 though, so I'm sure the tuning is completely different on the newer engines.

What program are you talking about? I have a 99 4x4 4L ohv that I'd like to optimize. I've personally never done any "tuning: unless you count changing BCM settings in my wife's Focus SE to allow me to run HIDs/LEDs without causing an idiot light. I've heard there is a member here on the forums that does mail order tunes. Does anyone know who this person is? Thank you.
