Is the marquis actually four wheel drive? That would be the easiest answer.

Yes. Watching the show, you can see the front tires spinning independently and at different speeds from the rear ( fronts spinning while rears were rolling slowly)

The only 2wd car, and that's because something broke up front.

It sounds like they where setup with the same gears then, just hope the fronts spin enough to keep stuff from binding up. Seems like it defeats the purpose.

You might like Season 2 of this show. Hell, you might like the first season. Just a crew and a couple of cameras, no big production team getting false reactions and retakes. Season 2 starts with cars like that Marquis going through trails. One guy has a 4 door Buick sitting on a F-350 chassis. They also widened a old Hi-Lux 9" and put a Ford 7.3L diesel in that little truck.
What show?

Option 2 is a transfer case with a differential in it e.g. np203 or 242. The differential in the transfer case allowing for differences in tire size.
Differential open on the street, then lock it when you are bogging.

Many 4x4 tractors have front and rear diffs of different ratios because you have the big AG tires in the back and maybe 25-28" steer tires in the front. Besides the logistics of trying to steer 40-44" tires 18" wide on a tractor, they block your view of the row to hoe, so to speak, and block your view of whatever you are trying to pick up or maneuver around. Same with a Ditch Witch or other equipment that is 4x4 and has a big heavy implement in the back such as a back hoe or 3 point hitch.
