it was just a little Lincoln 110v MIG with gas. Had set on the highest setting, and a fairly decent wire speed.

i actually just went to my local yard and pulled a new 5spd tranny.. was assuming it was a m50d r1 trans. came out of a 00 ex cab ranger 4.0 OHV. but had a 2001 newer front end on it. had sohc exhaust y pipe. AND a m50d r1 HD tranny. also noticed the clutch pedal set up was for a 3.0 master cylinder, talk about built on a friday!

Great write Up?

Wow great write up, would the trans tail housing from the 4.0 work on the same trans that was mated to a 3.0??

If it will, I would like to buy your old 4x4 tail housing, Need it
I sent you a PM...

Thanks

I had an HD and an R1 pulled apart next to one another, and they are identical inside.

The synchros are the same, the gear ratio is the same, the top plate/shifter is the same as the newer R1's as well. The top cover/shifter from my HD and an R1 from a 2.5L 2wd were identical.

My HD was from and Fx4 Lvl II and it had the mounting holes for the manual t case as well. The extension housing also had speed sensor and the output shaft had a tone ring on it, but I removed the tone ring and made an aluminum plug to fill the hole from the sensor.

The HD I had also had the casting in the top plate for another safety switch, but was not drilled/machined for the sensor.

From what I can see the only difference between the HD and R1 is the ability of the HD to bolt up to a SOHC.

The HD has no internal differences that I have seen.

Sorry to dig up a old thread. But will a 4.0 trans fit a 2.3? The 4.0 has a lower first and 2nd gear than the ones in the 2.3s. I think its a 3.72 vs a 3.40.

You have it backwards....

And, no the bellhousing pattern is different, but the internals can be swapped.

I have a 4.0 HD trans with 3.0 gears.

no, the 2.3 and 4.0 have very different bellhousing patterns

And as previously stated, you have it backwards, the 4.0 trans has what is best described as the close-ratio gear set, with taller gears 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

The reason the 4.0 gets the taller gears is because the 4.0 engine isn't very "Revvy".

I'll also add that when I initially built my truck I assembled it with a 4.0 engine, 4.10 gears and the wide ratio transmission with the 3.72:1 1st gear

And frankly it was a mistake, being used to the same setup with a 2.9 the additional torque of the 4.0 made the low 1st nearly useless except for creating custom made two-piece transmission output shafts (I broke two)

The "Close ratio" 4.0 trans 1st 3.40:1, 2nd 2.05:1, 3rd 1.31:1 the
"Wide ratio" gear-set used for all other engines (2.3, 2.5, 2.9, 3.0)
(1st, 3.72:1, 2nd, 2.20:1, 3rd 1.50:1)
the "HD" is another animal all together...)
