I was wondering how much stronger a Dana 30 solid front jeep axle then a D28. I currently have a D28 in my truck with a 302 and a C4. First off I hate TTB suspensions. I was thinking about doing a D30 swap mainly because its solid axle and I know its stronger then my D28. I know its not as strong as a 44 but I dont have the money to fund a 44 swap and I can get a D30 for free from a friend. I know its a jeep axle and I really dont want to hear the comments of why waste the time and money to put a D30 in I should just do a D44 I dont want to go full width and I dont have the money to narrow up a 44 and get shafts or buy a EB 44. So with that out of the way any info would be greatly appreciated

From what I've read a D30 is 5% to 30% stronger then a D28. Why that big of a difference....because it depends on if you up-grade it or not and mabey if it has a HP or LP.

I'm going to be doing the same thing, got mine for free plus it is a HP and I'm not upgrading it, I'm going to put 3.73 gears in it to match my 7.5 because I dont want to put a D35 rear end (also got it for free plus it has goodies in it) under my truck anymore. I just want my D30 under it.

And a D30 is weaker then a D35.

Just for shits and giggles, are you planning on running leaves or coils? I was convenced to finally use coils, got them for free too.

So if you already know that it's stronger than a D28, and know that it's not as strong as a D35 or D44, and you don't want anyone telling you why you should or shouldn't waste your money doing it... what is it exactly that you are asking for here?

Swap it in already if that's what you want.

This was just discussed in depth right here:
http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59832

Some common axles from weakest to strongest:
D28 (TTB) (weak, belongs on a golf cart or ATV/UTV)
D30 (solid) (approx. 5-30% stronger than D28)
D35 (TTB) (approx. 5-25% stronger than D30)
D44 (solid or TTB) (varies from 20% weaker to 5% stronger than D35)
D60 (solid) (approx. 30-60% stronger than D44)

(% ranges are due to variations over the years, such as an axle having different size/grade u-joints)

What year did it come from. The only "good" D30s are 95-99 XJs...

I dont know the year of mine but the four drag bars are made out of tube steel. I know it came out of a Cherokee but not sure if it was a Grand Cherokee or not.

Hmmm, Grand Cherokees with 318s and 360s hold up pretty well. Just got to get rid of the CV jointed axle shafts.:headbang:
