In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Ok.

Do you have a question you would like someone to answer? Or is there something you needed to say along with your unfocused pictures?

Was this a new cap, old cap? Details help, can't just post random pics and expect a diagnosis...

Generally it's a sign that the coil was arcing between the distributor cap and rotor button because of a gap or excessive resistance. Could be crappy parts, wrong parts, cap not tightened properly, or old parts that got a ton of carbon on them.

My trifocals were adjusted fine. The first 2 pictures are bad. That last picture is much better. But when you have a question, people will understand it better if you actually state the question instead of just posting blurry pictures with no text. I agree with Dirtman concerning the cause.

In all my years...not sure I've ever seen a cap that bad. They typically quit running (at least running horribly) long before the center of the cap melts away.

20,000 volts can do some fun and interesting things when it doesn't go where it should...

20KV?

My guess is that coil was working overtime and going all out closer to 50KV to do that damage.

Label that cap with make, year, engine and post it on every vehicle website in the world.
That can't be at all common.

What engine was this on?

It's posted in the Bronco II forum, but it's engine related and on the rail of a pickup bed. You have a V8 in your signature, but it's a 6 cylinder cap.
