Found the cage on one of the reverse gear pocket bearings bad so now I gotta get parts, might as well get new iron nuts for the two shafts since they're supposed to be single use and have already been reused...

With the new bearings on the input and output shaft there's now not much play at all so it's good to go there...

Ok, here's some pictures of the transmission rebuilding adventure... First off is the puller modification to get the rear bearing off:

Next is the rear tapered bearing, first the pitted rollers then the inner race, outer race didn't look too bad...

Then lastly the condition of one of the pocket bearings in the reverse gear on the counter shaft

Just for follow through, I got the thing back together and took a test drive today, trans works great now, silent in 3rd and 5th through 65mph in the 15 miles I drove it so far, and for the record I highly recommend the Centerforce clutch, in 12 years of abuse the friction disc only took 0.007" of wear and the flywheel still had machining marks from the last time it was faced, the way I was measuring I couldn't get a read on the pressure plate but it looked fine, I replaced both but could have re ran... if you look up clutch stuff on Summit and limit brands to Centerforce you'll only see a few things, I got CFT-381009 and CFT-CFT360032, great feel and great hook up with the weights, I've feathered the heck out of the old one, figured it was done but nope...

Nice. Good bearing carnage pics.

Where'd you get that puller? Thing is bad ass, I need one.

That's an older Proto puller I borrowed from a coworker, it was too short but had holes near the end so made due :), they still make them labeled as Stanley now (apparently same brand? said Proto/Stanley when I was looking) but the set is like $350!!! Gonna keep my eyes out for one at garage sales and such, I'm sure I've missed out on a few...

Now while paying more attention I think the '97 needs a rebuild on it's M5OD...
