There are Shelby Cobras, and there are Mustang Cobras made by Ford directly.

There were plenty of 4 lug Mustangs, but I don’t recall ever seeing a Ford 7.5 or 8.8 axle flange that didn’t have a recess in the center here...

Are Cobras from the "Ford Factory"? I thought Carol Shelby's Company did those mods in a different location, back then.
I wasn't trying to dissect your post. I just remember seeing the Saleen Mustang as a kid and noticed it had 5 lugs when my Uncle's 5.0 had 4.
The Cobra foxbody was 110% Ford.

Ford and Shelby had a falling out (see the movie and extrapolate why lol) and Ford was really trying to channel the old Shelby Mustang's without Shelby. IIRC there was a stink about it because the old Cobra really didn't have much to do with Ford aside from the use of Ford crate engines.

Shelby was actually working with Chrysler at the time of the Foxbody.

Saleen is its own deal, they bought Mustangs and converted them to their brand like Shelby did back in the day.

I thought that too but then I got to thinking they probably wouldn't use factory axles anyway because a trike isn't near as wide as a Ranger.

Shelby went to Ford and said let me get some engines because he had a body/chassis from an English company to use and we will make it a new Ford race car...

At the same time he told the British company to give him a body/chassis because he had a Ford engine and we will make a British muscle car...

Both companies complied and he essentially ran off said screw you and made it his own car. Ford got back onboard once they realized the thing was unbeatable on the track.

I posted to a mustang forum hoping to get some help. Got one response that it looks like a fox body brake setup. Seems like that’s the concensus here too. How do I get this figured out? Need to get dialed in enough to order replacement shoes cylinder and fitting kit.

Seeing if my friend can find some ID numbers off the axel.

Post a pic of the center section of the rear... Someone here will recognize it.

What about a pinto rear axle? that was 4-lug and would about as narrow of a axle as you could get. Im not sure how far back a 7.5 was made, and that solid center of the axle hub is odd, Ive never seen that outside of a racing replacement part.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?

Take a picture of the housing from the rear and we can identify it for you. If the center section is bolted in the rear is likely an 8 inch which was used in Mustang IIs and Pinots as a four lug. If it has a bolted on rear cover it could be a 6 3/4 from a Pinto or an early six cylinder Mustang, a 7.5 or 8.8 from a fox body. With the possible exception of the wheel cylinder bore, Mustang IIs, Pintos, and fox Mustang 9 inch brakes were the same.

I am going to guess that it probably is a 7.5 out of a mustang or pinto... a trike would not need the cost, weight, or strength of an 8.8

Are these things factory made or all custom? Seems if they are factory made there would be some info out there on what rear they were using? :dunno:

If they are all one off custom builds then yes it's a crapshoot...

Kinda sounds like at least some of them were kits.

Fred's kit might have used Ford while Frank might have gotten a good deal on Yugo axles for his kit kind of a thing.

The solid hubs scream custom axle shafts which isn't a big deal, it's likely just a narrowed housing like 85 said above. If just going for hardware and shoes I'd bet money on Mustangs and Ranger 9" brakes being the same parts...
