Hollow Drum Sound From Air Filter Box 2.3L

Long story short is that when in park with engine running, rocking the steering wheel a few inches left and right of centre produces this sound. You can go from centre to the left and back again several times it will still do it. Centre to right and back several times, same results.

We took off the air filter cover and see if any would change, it only got louder.

Would there be a baffle in the plastic plumbing to the engine causing this?

First time I ever heard this.

Sounds to me more like a steering component is making the knocking noise. Probably on the same side as your air box...

Sounds to me more like a steering component is making the knocking noise. Probably on the same side as your air box...
I'm taking it in tomorrow to get some stuff done to it on the hoist (fuel filter, parking brake, rear axle seal). We can do the same thing on the hoist and see what happens, but its definitely a hollow drum sound, not a clunk. Nothing wrong with the steering when driving.

Definitely from the plastic airbox into the engine.

Anybody else have an explanation?

Remove ALL of the intake snorkel assembly, what do you hear directly at the throttle body?

I was thinking could it do with the power steering when initially engaged the engine management sucks in more air to prevent RPM drop? Maybe I'm not explaining it correctly. Its only when the steering wheel is moved enough, L or R, that the power steering would be called in.

What I was getting at is you feel the sound is coming from the airbox, one needs to take the airbox out of the equation.....remove the snorkel section, one has to keep the MAF connected, doing this will set a code as the MAF is no longer sensing air passing thru it but if you try this do you still hear this *hollow* sound?.

A lot of intake systems have some sort of resonator on it. If there is one, has it broke loose or is it missing and there is just a hole? It would be some sort of otherwise unexplained bulge off the intake system somewhere.

Once that MAF is not sensing air flow, the engine dies. But its definitely coming from that air intake plumbing. Engine rpms go up after the sound as the steering wheel is turned enough to build pressure for power steering.
