The FWD 3.8 (found in Taurus and Windstar among other vehicles) was prone to head gasket failure.

The coolant flow was changed in the 3.8 for front wheel drive applications and all hell broke loose, we had practically no trouble with 3.8's in F100's, Mustangs, T birds, and down sized(fox body) LTD's.

I will say the fastest stock truck i ever drove was a dakota. Guy i knew had a 99ish shortbox 2wd with a 4.7L and a 5speed...that thing would friggin move.


Up untill the late 90s or so i could tell you about any engine put in any domestic plated car built. After thay i kinda quit caring.

My buddy had a Dakota V8 and yea they hauled ass! But the truck was a P.O.S otherwise.... I couldn't believe they stuffed a v8 in a small truck, why couldn't Ford do that to the ranger? Imagine how awesome a production ranger 5.0 or 4.6 would be. I can't do any ranger v8 swap due to CA emissions... Maybe they can stuff a coyote v8 into the new ranger as an svt model, Id immediately buy one.

Ford did stuff a 5.4L in one at one point as a one off....think it was called "thunderbolt".

They had plans to stuff a Coyote in the Ranger Down Under but the plan got scuttled thanks to Covid-19 tanking auto sales.
