When in "Drive" the computer will control the transmissions gear shifting/selection.
It uses RPM, wheel speed(speedometer) and throttle position, to determine the best gear ratio to use.

I have never owned an automatic 4x4 so can't say how it would shift when in 4low.
I would think you would what to use manual shifting, i.e. select 1st on column or 2nd to maintain driver control of shifts.
But just guessing

I'm thinking your 100% right on putting it in drive 1 to control the shift , but if I remember correctly it always stayed in low gear ( drive 1 ) ever when it was in regular ( drive D ) . Maybe I'm just getting to darn old and can't recall this correctly . It goes into 4low just fine and all else seems OK . Thanks Ron , you need to get an automahtic , no really I wish the 04 was a stick .Thanks again !!!!!!!!!

I like automatics, all my cars are automatics, just seems like all the 4x4 trucks I ever owned were manuals :)

My CTS has a SNOW setting for auto, it doesn't use 1st gear, you start off in 2nd which makes sense don't want that torque to start tires spinning.

Caddy , now that's a nice set of wheels , I grew up with caddys ,my father was a GM exec and we always had GM's but I broke the mold when I bought my first Ford at 14 ,it was a 57 starliner , man I almost became the only son to get booted out of the house ,just kidding.

I s'pose testing 4 low is good , but the torque is what you don't need in snow. If you have AWD , put in 4 High and D to keep wheel spin to a minimum. :D

I think I could hide my own Easter eggs, this year.

As Ron said just put it in Drive and go. I however would not use 4 low. It's only if your stuck. I shift into 4 low twice a year just to keep it working. I shift right back out of it.

That's all I was doing is testing it ,I'm not stupid ! I never had it shift up when it was in 4low and was just asking if it was suppose to up shift when in 4low because I don't recall it upshifting when I was off-road and going much faster than the other day when it shifted to 2nd and then abruptly dropped down to first gear . I hope you understand now.
