How can you test if it's working? Can you stop when it's warmed up and look to see if it's not turning or something

If it sounds like a jet engine all the time the fan clutch is stuck locked up. If it overheats all the time it isn't locking.

Kind of a pass fail sort of thing...

My current fan came off an Explorer at the wrecking yard. The original had cracks around it but I think they all do

When I first crank it it's loud, but after maybe 10 seconds it settles down. After that it's forgotten about

My F-150 for whatever reason kept backing out a bolt on the water pump pulley and it would hit the fan and spin it. I was reluctant to locktite it, but think that was my eventual solution. When that bolt backed out enough to spin the fan, you knew it. It would get really noisy, sounded like a jet engine and a noticeable drag. I’d suspect that’s how a stuck clutch on the fan would be.

The mechanical fans spin all the time, so it’s not like being able to look at an electric fan and see it spin up and stop. There’s enough drag in the mechanical fans that they spin whether the clutch is engaged or not. But when their clutch isn’t engaged, it’s just windmilling. Don’t try to stop it with anything because you can damage the fan blades or cut your fingers.

I like the Volvo fans. Two speed, self contained relay.

@Elutheros - how did you secure the bottom of the Volvo shroud in your application? I am about to install that in my truck and have not decided the best way.

On the regular Explorer double core radiator the bottom of the plastic shroud slipped right into the clips on the bottom of the radiator. Since I installed the taller Explorer radiator I haven't put anything there to hold the plastic shroud against the radiator. Your question reminded me I have to do something about that. :) I think one small straight bracket to the bottom aluminum of the radiator will be enough.
