Hello. Thanks for reading my Post.

I am trying to replace the cam synchronizer in my 99 V6 Ranger. I took out the two 5.5mm screws and the 10mm screw and marked it and took pics.

The issue is that I can't remove the cam sync at all. I can't pull it out, turn it, or move it at all, so I'm unsure how to take it out???

*Any idea what I am doing wrong? Anything helps.

Update: I was finally able to remove the cam sync. When I got it out it had metal shavings in the sync like the images below. I am going to get a new sync.....

Did this cause any damage does anyone think? The black metal shavings are making me wonder what happened to the cam sync to do this?

Always learning new stuff on the Ranger. Thanks for any input or advice. I watched a video but am still a little afraid...to make sure I line it up right.

I don't think that came from the cam sync. If you look at the discoloration from the oil you can see the lower part is actually in the oil flow where as the top, just below the seal, is not. This makes me think it is rust more than anything. See if the chunks are steel/iron, use a magnet and this will help tell.

The gear on the other hand has a couple silver marks in it making me wonder why. This is where something has rubbing/wore a clean spot into it. Without being able to handle it it is difficult to tell from the pictures.

Thanks for your reply. I got the new one I'm. I took a pic of it before I tried to try and line it up exactly as it was when removed.... but cam sync only would drop one way.....the notch in the image is slightly to the left....when installed here the center notch was pointing directly north straight up...tried like 10 times it kept going in the same way as before slight left but could not do it. So, I tried it in the north position and the truck started right up....still seems to chirp though...normal after the new install.?

*So many things to learn.....thanks.

chirp? apparently the chirp did not go away?

i would remove the belt and start it and see if the chirp goes away then.

Because the teeth on both the Syncro and cam are twisted, same as a distributor, when you go to install it you must twist the teeth a little one direction or the other so that it compensates for the for the twisted teeth. It takes me a couple times to get the teeth lined up properly so that it compensates and I have done a few distributors in the past.

If you watch the center of the syncro/distributor you will see it spin one direction or the other when sliding it in and this will help you figure out how much and what direction you need to twist it so that things line up properly. You only need to go one tooth one direction or the other to get it lined up properly.

Just a tip for the future. (y)

Ok, I am trying to digest that information on the install...lol. I lined it up one section off from where I took out the old one...I used the tool that came with the cam sync but not sure ti was done right.

*Once I replaced the CAM Sync truck fired up but after a few miles I got a P1309 Code. I tried to remove it again and re do it. It starts but waiting to see if CEL comes back on as I removed Neg Battery to re do it. Little lost on exactly how to line up or how to tell if correct....

*I replaced the Cam Sync but I still hear squealing.... it's gotten worse since replacement not better.

Are you sure the squeal is coming from the synchro and not the belt? Try what Bobbywalter mentioned and take the belt off and start it. If the squeal is gone then it's in the belt drive and not the synchro.

don't forget the lower shaft engages the oil pump.
sometimes you have to put a socket down that hole and slightly turn the oil pump to align it.
a couple drops of oil below the tab won't hurt anything.

I am going to check the squeal out further to make sure it is not what you said a pully or something intermittent. I do not hear it at idle, however.....

I noticed the turn when installing the Cam Sync...my issue is that I cant tell how to make sure it is aligned correctly or in time?. I seen a few videos but can't tell how to get it 26 degrees from tps?

I tried to match it up but got it wrong...I used a tool that matched it up like too perfectly. P1309 code came back within 15 miles.....

This is new to me so I am sure I made some mistake......just trying to figure out how to fix it to get this cam sync in time.....

Is driving bad like this?

Ok, so I figured out what the "Squeal" really was. When I was driving on the freeway the wheel bearings on my passenger side front tire went out and I had to tow her home. Sad Face.

*So, I assume the cam sync may not have even been bad. I assumed the jumping oil gauge and the squeal was the cam sync so I replaced it.

*After replacing the cam sync I got the P1309 code. I tried it again and the P1309 code came back again. So, I was able to get the TDC on plug #1 and re-installed the cam sync a third time with the tool even. Same issue...after 8 miles I got the crazy oil gauge again and CEL came back on P1309.

*Note: after the final TDC cam sync install the brakes came back, as they went out after prior install.... felt like no fluid and the pedal went to the floor suddenly; very weird?? .....

*Since the oil gauge issue happened before I put in the new cam sync I assume the cam sync and the oil gauge are not related as the old and new ones show same symptom.

*If I got TDC correct and the cam sync installed correctly why does the P1309 keep coming back? Although I had the oil gauge issue with my old cam sync I did not have the P1309 code.

the code sees both the cam sensor and the wires going between it and the computer as one item.
try reseating the computer connector 3 times. maybe spray some electrical cleaner on the pins.

the oil pressure switch is just below the cam sync unit. check for a good connection.

Hello. Okay, I have reseated the cam sensor three times and used both the new one and the old Ford sensor. I also used an electrical cleaner in it, as you suggested. It was still a no-go.

I tried again to line up the Cam Sync and got a guy to help who said he was a 30 year Ford mechanic... he said it was at TDC and all correct then left.....it started and ran but the P1309 code came back on in less then 5 miles.

I now have a P13409 Code and a p1409 Code (EGR Selonoid) after the last attempt.

I used this chart when installing sync. I marked TDC with white out on the Balancer but am unsure how that times to the crank sensor wheel.

Anyway, I might need help with the codes p1309/p1409.........I am a DIY guy but make errors a lot....or miss small things.

After a few miles driving the p1409 code is gone. These are the codes I am left with.

p1303 and p0353 and the attached IM Readings. The Cat-EGR-EVAP are always a Red X...here the O2 and the HRT are now Red X also.

Thanks for any input possible. I am hoping to get input of what I did wrong and how to fix it. I think maybe the timing of cam to crank sync? or cam TDC to crank WHheel? Still trying to put it all together.....my power animal is a turtle.....
