Swapping to any other motor requires alot of changes and money.

For ANY other engine you will need the engine, transmission, motor mounts, radiator, ENTIRE wiring harness, ECU, etc etc.

Stick with the 2.3, it is a very common engine. For an exact drop in replacement you can find them in 1989-1994 Ford rangers, Mazda B2300's and 1991-1994 ford mustangs. Junkyards are generally full of them.

Are those the only vehicles you can find a 2.3 in

The 2.3 existed from 1976 to 1998 in tons of Ford vehicles. It was probably fords most popular motor ever. However, after 1994 Ford switched to OBD2, different computer system so from 95-98 you would need different wiring even though the motor is technically the same. It may work, i don't know.

Same in reverse, the 2.3 was only dual plug from 89 on so anything earlier is single plug and requires a ton of wiring changes. Also dual plug made more power. So 89-94 is drop in fit but yea there are tons of 2.3's out there but 89-94 is absolutely perfect drop in. Anything else, you may need to fiddle...
