Ok, for the 3rd time, im trying to setup my home network. heres what i have:

an XP home laptop w/wireless card
an XP pro desktop
a vista (sorry, i didnt mean to swear) basic desktop
a router

i want to plug the 3 computers into the router and have the 2 desktops be able to use the laptops wireless connection.

my first problem is when i run the home network setup wizard on the laptop, it gets to the end and says and error occured (doesnt say what) then it tells me to try running it again with different settings (i cant) or to configure the network manually (which i dont know how to do).

ideas?

i know a few things about this, but not extensively. the only people who will know are the makers of your router.

-setting up a network manually means that you set it up individually on one computer, copy the settings onto a thumbdrive, then copying them to the other computers.

i think what you have to do is set up a "home" network with your hard wired computers, and a "wireless" network with your wireless laptop. (if i understand you right. it's a little confusing)

i don't know for sure, the best thing to do would be to contact the company that made you router. trust me. every router is different. i hate them. just look on the side. it should have a number to call.

the wireless network is already set up, im using it right now.

my router (actually, i think the right term is "switch") is just a cheapy from radio shack. it doesnt have any adjustments or software...just plug in and go.

i would set up a home network, but like i said, the network wizard wont run from start to finish on the laptop. i would configure the network manually, but i dont know how to do that.

heres how the network is physically connected:

the laptop uses a wireless signal from outside the network. id like the 2 desktops to be able to use the wireless network through the laptop.

anybody else?

i think my problem is in the laptop. if this were set up right, i should have two networks under network connections; one wireless, one wired, right? i cant seem to get my wired network to show up for some reason. according to the hardware manager, there are no problems with the card.

i also tried pinging either desktop from the laptop, or the laptop from one of the desktops and i get no response....

I've read this and do not see a mention of internet.
Is the internet available on the wirelesss only?
If the network is "set up" and you are using it, what is the problem?
Does each computer have the same WORKGROUP name?
Is Internet connection shareing turned ON?
DO you know how to rum ipconfig /all from the command line?

yes, my internet is available only via the wireless signal. the wifi signal comes from a source outside my apartment (with prior approval).

my network is physically set up, but doesnt seem to be functioning. i dont see the wired network under the laptops network connections and when i ping the individual computers there is no response.

the computers all have the same workgroup name.

since i cant get the newtwork setup wizard to run on the laptop, i dont know if internet connection sharing is turned on, and i dont know how to turn it on manually.

i know about ipconfig/all, but i dont know what to do with the information (besides use the IP addresses to ping my other computers).

Does the laptop allow two network connections?
You have a wireless network (1) and a wired connection (2), right?
Is the wireless a PCMIA card or built in.
Some older laptops would not allow two.

If you run this from a command prompt..
ipconfig /all > temp.txt
you will get a txt file you can post here.

you need to open network from the desktop on the laptop (xp) to find properties and sharing to turn it on. I'll fire up a PX laptop to refresh my memory on this.

The ping could be blocked by firewall, can the wired computers ping each other?

i have two network cards. the wireless card is an external PC slot card (a factory dell job). the wired network adaptor is built-in.

i know this computer will do what i want, because we had the network set up the same way with marys old laptop in place of the 2 desktops before (2 laptops surfing the net with one wireless card). i had to post on here to get help that time as well. i dont remember what all we did and the topic was lost in the forum switchover

i dont have "properties" under "network connections" anywhere that i can see.

this is XP home BTW.

one of the desktops doesnt have any antiviruses or firewalls on it (windows firewall turned OFF). the laptop has windows firewall, AVG, and spybot. would having a firewall on just one machine block the ping both ways?

EDIT: just tried it with windows firewall turned off on the laptop and still no ping response...

the only thing under the advanced tab of the wireless networks properties is windows firewall :dunno:

i ran ipconfig/all. i was wondering why it only showed the wireless connection. like i said, my device manager doesnt show any problems with the wired network adaptor, and the lights on the back of the computer (where the cable plugs into it) are on.

nope, no combination of unplugging any or all of the computers seems to make any difference.

im somewhat disgusted with myself...always check the basics first :annoyed:

uninstalled and reinstalled the software for the ethernet adaptor and everything fell right into place. i didnt even have to mess with IP configurations. all 3 computers are online now (even the vista machine figured everything out on its own).

thanks for your help dennis, i really appriciate it :icon_thumby:
