heater fan issues

the heater fan in my 83 only blows on the highest setting. I think it might be the resistor but 1 Im not sure thats the problem and 2 i dont know where it is and how to fix it. has anybody else had to deal with that problem?

sounds like your resistor to me....its located in the engine bay close to the heater fan...4 screws and a plugs is all it takes to change it out

The switch and the resistor control the ground to the motor it is more than likely the resistor because you have high speed it bypasses the resistor.

I have the same problem. It only works on High and I smell a burning smell. The picture you have, is correct except you don't have A/C. Mine has a bigger box but it shows the same plug. I think mine may be one big unit/peice. When I do turn it on to high, I can hear it kicking on and operatating. Could it have that burning smell because its bad?

No, on high it bypasses the resistor pack. Although, a faulty resistor pack and/or wiring would be the reason it only runs on high.

the blower motor itself is resistive as it slowly dies...and that takes out the resistor assembly from being hard to turn.


all the wires are probably brittle as hell now too.

a new resistor pack which is cheap will work for a spell most of the time...

if its the original blower motor or it looks pretty old i tend to replace the motor and resistor at the same time...then the hard brittle shitty wires will last longer.

i have some with over a million miles...they are rough..resistive sob's....and i just live with high or vent these days...

I've replaced my Resistor, and the heater fan switch *in the AC/Heater unit in the dash*. I got one from a junkyard from a 84 that had just come in today and I haven't hooked the battery up. I'm kinda' afraid to because when I tried, it set off a little spark. Could there be a wire or something that'd cause that? Or is that normal?

I'm afraid of electronics and the sort.

*Long story short, when i was young my cousin jambed my finger into a open lamp socket that was On full of pepsi and I got severely electricuted.*

If you haven't hooked up the battery, where did you see a spark? At the battery? That's normal and it won't do anything as long as your battery is grounded (make sure to put the + side on first and then the neg...and make sure the neg is not touching anything when you put the positive side on...

Batteries and electronics can be scary...especially if your cousin lives nearby...

Oh, the burning smell might be leaves in the heater box...take the fan out of it's cowl and stick your hand in...if you feel leaves...get a vacuum and clean it out...easier that way than by hand...and use a vaccum with a plastic hose...reduces electric shock (just FYI...not really needed here)...

Ohh.. Well, I checked this morning and I had left the lights on when i tried to put the battery cable back on the batter. Hah. its a childhood fear of electronics. Could be worse, could be scared of heights and go skydiving. Hahahahaha! Its all good.

I was just concerned about the burning smell. My friends 70 something Cordoba was smoking for a month before his heater settled.

I got a junkyard hearter control switch. It didn't work. Went to Oriellys and got a new one for 30bucks. Installed it abit ago and it works! Woooo! I'm happy. I called 8 different places to find that switch. I'm a happy fat panda.

i did look at my parts trucks, one of which still had the resistor in it. i switched them out and that didnt help so i guess its off to the partss store for a new one for me too

You can normally tell if the resistor is bad by looking at it but a ohm meter will tell you for sure so will buying a new one I just like to test everything before powering up. Two wires go to the fan one is hot key on and the other is ground through the resistor. with a ohm meter disconnect the resistor and have someone switch the fan in all the positions while you test each wire to ground all of the wires shouldprovide ground except when fan is off. with the fan 2 wire connected turn the key on you should get power to one of the resistor wires that is backfeeding through the fan motor that is high speed. I always check for direct shorts before connecting any component just a habit.

^^ I just look at them and can tell...the browner the worse...

My last one came from an F150...95 or 96...same connector but different wire colors...works fine so far...

The main problem, and I've mentioned this before, is, I think, the angle that it is installed. My Ranger has no A/C so the connector is in a direct line from the open front and gets quite a bit of moisture...the ones I've seen where the connector is turned slightly (via the design of the housing) all seem to be in perfect condition...

Or maybe it's just my imagination...
