h9 axle description question

ok, i've been up one side of the internet and down the other, and even called the ford dealership, with no answers...

i've got a buddy with a wrecked f-150, built 09/98, with axle code h9, which from what i can tell is a 3.88 8.8 l/s but, no one seems to know what spline count it is, logic tells me it's an f-150, so it must be 31, but everything i can find says "ford used the 31 spline in everything v8 (4.6) and bigger" but this has the 4.2 (or whatever it was) v6 in it... it's 2wd, and auto...

is this actually a 31 spline or is it 28? any way to figure it out without crawling under it? i'm a little layed up after a motorcycle accident, and trying to find parts to fix my destroyed rear diff (most likely need gears)

my plan is that i'm going to pull it, grab some new 4.10's toss it into my truck and drive with that till i save some money for the locker i want, then use the new carrier for the locker, if my torsen is in good shape, and it's only the r&p that's destroyed, i'll sell it. after all, the torsen was replaced about 25,000 km ago

also, what are those above diffs worth, if they are both in good condition?

Not too sure about 3.88 gears....don't think that was every a possibility.

oops, typo, yeah, 3.55, not 3.88

no, i'm still going with my carrier, with the FX4 LII, I have 31 spline axles, and something in my diff is in really rough shape, and the Torsen requires synthetic 75-140 with friction modifier, which makes for about 100$ worth of fluid, so I don't want to pull it apart just to find I need different parts, so i'm going to replace everything inside the housing, except the axles, so a new carrier, spider gears, R&P, and even a set of clutches!

then I will be able to atleast drive around without worrying about the really bad noise i'm hearing making something go BOOM while driving down the highway. I can assess the Torsen, figure out if I want to go with a lockrite, put the torsen back in with new gears or what, without being down a truck. I will most likely go with the lockrite, and if the torsen isn't damaged, sell it.

it's like $20-30 in GL-5 to fill the housing, much cheaper than what the torsen requires

I think just about everything newer uses 75-140, it isn't that expensive either.

I know it is what my '02 F-150 called for.

most use 75-90 conventional, it's also known as GL-5, 75-140 is often an additional approved oil, mine is synthetic 75-140, which is $33 per liter, and I think mine takes just over 3 liters, plus a $10 bottle of friction modifier

Yeah 80-90 is really common in the old stuff but it seems somewhere around 2000 Ford starting switching to 75-140. Both my F-150 and my mom's '02 Explorer call specifically for 75-140. Mine is a open 9.75 and hers is a IRS 8.8 with a clutch limited slip. Of course she gets the additive too.

I think mobil one was about $20/quart when I changed mine.

I have not seen 80w90 in a ford rear end since before the 2000's. All 75w140.

Either way....run 80w90 in it if you want. It isn't going to cause any issues at all.

I am still curious about the price, but had another question, is it a 3/4 or 7/8 cross pin in that f-150? I am going to guess it's 7/8, but don't want to guess wrong

An F-150 will be the High-Torque version of the 8.8"

31-spline axles and of course a 7/8" diameter cross-pin.

I know when I was looking at 8.8 gears there was some sort of year break for the F150s...so not sure when that break was. It might not be until they went 6 lug. (They exist, I was surprised the first time I saw one. Disc brake, 6 lug, goofy width)

No. The 31 spline Expo/FX4 axle has the 7/8 pin anyways. (Well stock the FX4 has that odd shaped retainer)

I had FX4 gears on a 95 150 carrier in an Expo housing with no issue. Another thing to remember is the F150 Track-Lock uses a stiffer spring to compensate for the extra leverage added by the longer axles.

ok cool, I won't be using the clutches, I just need the carrier out of my buddy's truck, but I think he wants like 100$ for it, and i'm not paying him that for a used carrier that has been sitting in his totaled truck, behind his truck for like 3-4 years

if I end up going to a Junk yard, can I use 31 spline axles in a 28 spline carrier? I would think the only difference in the actual diff would be the spider gears, but if I am replacing them, it shouldn't matter, right?
