quick question will my 88 ranger pass the sniff test in n.j.?
replaced bad 0/2 sensor and both in-line cats were plugged
so I ran a 2 inch piece of pipe and broke it all up.
can not afford new cats $300 so hopefully I can get through
the tailpipe test what are your guys opinion
thanks for the answers.

It probably will not pass a sniffer test without cats.

probably not

What engine?

If cats were plugged engine was probably running rich for awhile, so you could have a bit of carbon build up in the cylinders and EGR system.
Have a look at the spark plugs for black deposits, thats carbon.

Does engine ping on acceleration using regular gas?

And just FYI, there is a Federal fine if cats are removed OR bypassed(i.e. the tube installed), up to $2,500
So be careful, a close inspection may cost you more than the cats :)
EPA Clean Air Act, Federal Offense to remove and/or modify a stock catalytic converter and by Section 205 (a). The operator's fine can be no more than $2,500 and the installation agency no more than $25,000.
That is a 1988 addition so if you had an '87 Ranger you might be able to fight it, but even if you won it would cost you more than the Cats, lol.

You could get some used cats from a salvage yard, $40-$70, they won't last as long as new but how much longer will the '88 be on the road?
Another 25 years :)

sniff

It will not pass, and now your cats are no good to a rebuilder who does exchanges, if you stand behind the tail pipe and take a smell you will smell unburned hydrocarbons (like old cars) in stead of that carbonic acid smell

Clicked on the fist few CAT's on the link I posted, they say "3-way" under "Converter style" in the info. I guess you'd need just one. Depends on if they require it OEM style or not. Or if they just do the sniffer.
