I am trouble shooting my 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0, 4x4 system. I am looking for a scan tool that will allow me to test the BCM. I am new to this scan tool stuff but the tech article write up (here on the tech section) seems easy enough to follow. I would like to buy a scan tool that would work with my 2013 ford edge too. one that would allow me to test most things like brakes, abs, bcm,ect. Is there a scan tool that will work for both? 2000 and 2013?

Thanks

Thanks guys, the research I've done before I asked seems that 2006 and up Ford changed to a new system. I didnt know if the after market provides a scam tool to do both.
I'll look into both. Thanks again.

An elm and rasberri pi along with forscan is the cheapest point of entry...and very effective.

Forscan beats most scan tools until you get into the $1,000+ tools. Forscan only works on Ford, Mazda, Lincoln, and Mercury but covers everything they made since 1996 to now. If you have a windows laptop forscan will cost you about $20-$100 bucks for a usb-to-obd2 elm327 adapter depending on the quality of the adapter, the program itself is free.

Have an OBDLink#MX+ module (~$100), connects WirelessBT to AndroidPhon & OBDLink App + other free Apps;
used for Routine Maintenance+DriveMonitor.
Also have OBDLink# EX module (~$55), connects WiredUSB to WindowsLapTop & ForScan App;
used for InDepth Maintenance+Configuration.
There are many other less & more expensive OBD2 options
Click here for more info on these OBD2 devices.

Hmmm, that sounds interesting!!! I already have an elm, it's the MX+ version. Works very well.
I've been reading about Forscan, there was a free windows download, that I assume is drivers and such. L check that out too.
Have you done this set up or just seem or heard of it?
Thanks for the help.

I should have finished reading all the posts before I replied. Looks like I am going to be in the "good" here.

As all my vehicles are Ford.

2013 Focus 107k
2013 Edge 109k
2000 Ranger, 152k
So the ForScan will be my go to.
Thanks again for all the help and pointing me on the right direction. I cant wait to get my Ranger going again.

Forscan is great. Takes a little getting used to, but it can be a huge help. I have used it a bunch of times, but most of my stuff is too old for it, although I did update my old code reader to a digital for those.

I am also going to clean all the grounding points to frame and body. I fixed an electrical problem on 81 TransAm that way. So I am going to do that before anything else. Use my dremel and clean the paint off and a dab of die electric grease.
