Hello there,

Just recently picked up a 1993 Ford ranger 4x4 STX Supercab with 4.0L and a 5 spd. The problem is that it has a 4" lift and 31" tires and both axles are open diff and 3.27 gears.
That being said I have plenty of room to fit 33s and want to regear and rebuild my axles. I was planning on 4.56 gears and wanted to know if anyone has run that ratio with 33s and if my stock 3.27 carriers would work with that ratio. I know I need a notched center pin n the rear axle but wasn't sure if it needed different carriers all together. I have a Jeep JK and on those if you want to regear, 3.37 and lower(numerically higher), and you have factory 3.27 ratios you will need new carriers.

Thanks

There are no carrier breaks with our ford axles, not like Jeep axles. So you can install 4.56 gears with no issues.

don't buy a notched cross pin, I wasted $30 on one and didn't put it in because of how it looked... just grind the tip of the tooth that gets in the way of removing the cross pin, I did it on my 5.13's and it worked fine, I doubt the notched pin would have stood up to the abuse it took to twist my housing...
