Like I said when I plug the laptop in and power it up, it starts working (fan comes on, all status lights work) but the laptop has no image on either the laptop screen or when using an external screen. It doesn't even go to the bios and I'm suspecting it's not even getting that far, since it doesn't make that little beep I expect to hear.

I can't seem to figure it out. I removed the panel above the keyboard and the screens plugged in, no one stole the ram or the hard drive out of it so I'm good there, unless maybe my ram is corrupt?

Worst case scenario is that it becomes parts. I purchased it in the present condition as part of a bulk buy on various electronics. Managed to fix one laptop to the point of where I can repair the non essentials and get it back in action and I pieced together a couple non working desktops to make one working one. Funniest thing was when I plugged a mobile dvd player in that had "battery issues" only to discover the cord ends were disconnected. One new plug later and I have a perfectly working dvd player. :icon_thumby:

I would try to check the CMOS battery, though on a laptop they can be a bitch to get at compared to a standard desktop/tower rig. Many a start up issue can be traced to a bad on-board CMOS backup battery. I'm guessing with a little bit of persistence, you'll be able to bring your old gateway laptop back to life.

To me, it sounds as if your motherboard has went out. Which part or the mother specifically is hard to say, but it can easily cause the symptoms that you are experiencing. It could be either that, or your processor is gone, but the motherboard is much more likely. Your data can be saved, but it would be more cost effective to replace the laptop than to get it fixed

I threw this one in my parts bin. :)

I don't care about the data, it's not a computer I owned previously.

your dvd player thing sounds like my tail lights... i got them for $40, all it turned out to be was the connector that plugs into the stock 3157 plug was melted... cut that off and 10 hours of soldering a broken light bulb onto the wires, add a little silicone, and i was done!
