I just bought a 2008 Ranger. It has the 16" tires, a 4.0 V-6, and the overdrive unit. Is 20 mpg all I can expect? Even on highway driving? Has anyone been able to get these trucks up to the 25 mpg or better? If so, How? Thanks in advance.

With my 31's and a 4.0 I get 24-25 when im headed south with a tail wind. I never get better than 20 driving north.

With it being a 4.0, you are pretty much stuck at getting less than 20mpg. A few suggestions is take it easy on the throttle. If its a manual transmission, don't under dog it (too low rpms) or over rev it between shifts. On my 4-banger Ranger, I usually shift @ 3k RPMs and cruise around 1.8-2.0k RPMs. Downshifting when power or accleration is needed.

Other tips would be to install smaller tires (easier torque to turn). Check the diff ratio to ensure that its not too small (lower ratio) or too tall (large ratio). A good example, with 225/70R15, a 4.0 would do good with a 3.55, or the older 2.3/2.5 does good with 3.73. With 235/70R16, 4.0 = 3.73, and the older 2.3/2.5 = 4.10.

Is it 4wd or 2wd? Automatic or manual transmission? I have a 4.0 with automatic and 4wd. The best I have ever gotten was 18 mpg. And I only managed to do that once. Every other time has been 17.7 mpg or less, and that's all highway driving.

If you can get 20, be happy! My 4.0L auto 4x4 generally gets 18 - 19 so far. I hope to get 20-21 on summer gas. I don't think I'll see 25 no matter what direction I drive!

Well I guess I have to live with it now! My wifes Cad gets 28 mpg on the freeway, my 81 Corvette gets better than 20 on the highway, The v-6 gmc 4x4 I gave up for the Ranger got around 22 on the highway. Feel a little foolish right now. Oh well.

I've got a 02 4.0 2WD auto that gets 21-22 consistently (every tank), but it only does 22.something on the freeway. The first three tanks it was under 20, so yours may get better after break-in. I also put a performance program on mine which seems to help the MPG. For a truck with this much power, over 20 every tank ain't bad.
