I saw a post on the Ring Neighbors app locally regarding a gas theft from a Ranger Lariat. They had drilled a hole into the plastic tank and the picture showed a convenient access hole thru the metal shield. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and if there is any reason not to cover that hole in the shield to prevent the access.

What's the worst that could happen?
If that hole goes directly into the tank, then blocking it to stop fuel from splashing out would be reason enough for me.
Let the thieves drill another hole --- and maybe park in a different spot.

It's probably in the shield to allow water to drain out from between the tank and shield, or it's to allow the shield to be lighter.

Surprised they didn't take the gas AND the Cats while they were under there, takes a lot longer for the gas to drain out than cutting a few exhaust pipes with a sawzall, lol

I would get airbag or hydraulic suspension and just drop that frame onto the ground when parked :)

Its probably better to be self deprecating than self defecating.

There's no room to cut the cat out of the 2019+ trucks

The video of the thief shows him boldly walking up to the guys Ranger parked in his driveway in early morning daylight with the gas can and ducking under the truck like he’s done it before many times and seemed to know exactly where to go. Too bad the truck was parked outside the garage.

Makes you want to park a junker outside with a tank full of sewer water.

Catalyst theft is big again out my way. Seems to go in cycles. Mainly it's newer vehicles being hit.

Now going up in my area because they put in a new "Law" that requires ID to recycle a Cat, so the "fence" just pays less cash for them, so instead of stealing 3 or 4 a night they need to do 6 or 8 a night to make the same money, inflation, lol

But on the bright side, for the thieves, with the high gas prices the big gas guzzlers are parked longer so better chance to get the big Cats

cat theft has gotten bigger in the columbus ohio area, not so much where Im living. My “cat” is merely a empty canister. Hell the whole exhaust system is rigged together with sheet metal & hose clamps. Almost wouldnt need a sawzall, just a cordless dewalt with a screwdriver bit, and sidecutters for the copper wire its all hanging by.

There are a lot of car lots near me, all along the same road. New and used. Most of them the lots are not closed off when nobody is home.

Great for things like this because they can easily hit a dozen cars without a nosey neighbor noticing.

Yeah, most of them have cameras, but they don’t do much good after the fact.

I was wondering if a skidplate would help, but I guess not. Mine doesn't have them. ARB's unit might be better but would probably cost more than my insurance deductible if someone did drill a hole in it. I don't live in a high crime area though.

Crossed threads are tight threads.
The movie industry I work for spends a lot of money on 24hr security guards at every location. Nothing deters thieves like someone being there, especially armed.

One of the set painters keeps a smoke alarm in his truck box, because they simply torched into his old one. I would assume they had one of those mini oxy/acetylene kits HVAC and plumbers use.

Gas is $6/gal here. Gas theft stories are all over the news daily. Cost me $95 bucks of 87 octane to fill up the ranger.
