Probably unrelated, just a bad luck streak. Yea they pushrods aren't very good at moving oil to the top end.
Are you sure its not just the infamous 4.0 tick? Mine ticks for a few mins when cold, then goes away for the day.
I started the truck every day to move it out of its cocoon and into the yard where I had room to work on it- Once in maybe 10 starts would it make the noise cold, but then it would clear up and idle smooth. Today as I drive it two blocks to get gas, it got noisy and never stopped 😞

Pulling heads? to replace lifters. Is that necessary on the 4.0. I can take the plenum off and access the lifter bay on my 2.9. Are the head gaskets blown? Ive seen worse rocker arm contact points. looks a little tight? Little lapping and good as new. I would look at cam/lifter contact surface for wear.
If you pull the heads, get them magna-fluxed!!

Yup, the lifter bores are partially covered by the cylinder heads in the 4.0 ohv. I have one completely collapsed lifter, might as well replace all, along with head bolts, gaskets, rocker arms and push rods

That changes things a bit. How many miles on the bottom end?

As far as I can tell, 133,000 miles. Compression test the other day came up with 175-185 all cylinders before the noise started.

While this engine is down for repair... I would test and rebuild the original injectors. Or send them out to be done.

Crossed threads are tight threads.
I would just rebuild the whole engine, for more power too.

Hmmm… I may actually still have the originals… good idea, I will look into that.

I had thought about rebuilding- but for $2500, I can get a reman 4.0 with a 5 year warranty… decisions, decisions! Lol. Might have to just sell my B2500 (new rebuilt engine) since I don’t need the two trucks- I do like the utility of the extended cab of my B series(stereo), but the regular cab Ranger with Flareside bed just looks so good.

133.000 aint bad. do the top end and see how she takes it. My 2.9 has had it done twice. Plenum has been off 3 time to clean injectors. Rebuilding injectors are a breeze. I still have the OEM injectors from 87'. I keep clean spares. As long as the coils still fire, its all cleaning and O-ring replacement.
