I just purchased an 03 4.0 xlt. The PO said it was a FX4 just that the decals were removed for some reason. I believe he is correct that it is a FX4, but could it be a level ll ? How can I tell what it really is? VIN maybe? Maybe there is something that's more obvious . TIA

Bilstein shocks, black interior, available mechanical shift transfer case are three Level II items that come to mind.

Good read here about that package: http://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2003-2/2003-ford-ranger-overview/

Bottom of page

Also on the drivers door tag under AXLE it should say R8 that's the code for the Torsen Limited Slip axle
R7 is the Ford Limited slip

Torsen axle used gears and synthetic oil only, Ford axle used clutch plates with regular oil with slip additive

Just checked the Etis.Ford.com site (saved to favorites) and it says it is a level 2. The rear code is R7 on the door though. Interior is black with blue down the center of the seats. Electric transfer shifting.
Doesn't really matter I'll be keeping it. When the OX locker is on the to do list I will pull the cover before I hit the pay with ??? button.

The tag on the cover does say to use only synthetic oil.

Carfax shows this truck to have been in a rental fleet and then sold (dealer purchased ) before it was a year old with around 12,000 miles. After it was resold, at around 16000 miles it had rear shocks replaced, I would guess due to stiff ride. Truck has just under 150,000 on the clock so the shocks could have been replaced again I suppose. The current shock's have the appearance of an airshock but no plumbing.

Not sure manual t-case was available as late as 09.

Mild correction-possibly?: "the Level II was stopped after 2007, though many Level II goodies could be ordered a la carte. In 2010 the Ranger discontinued the FX4 trim level for the US market but remained available in the Canadian market." --via wikipedia (spare me the blahblahblah reliable source. lol)

That would have been a RARE bird...

FEEL FREE TO BASH ME FOR: 'Where the hell did you get '09 from???'

All true, my 08, FX4, has all the Level II options except the Alcoa forged aluminum wheels. Don't think you could get twin sticks after 2005.

Twin sticks were only available in 02 FX4 and 03 FX4 LII. The manual transfer case was only available with the manual transmission. They also did not have manual hubs. There were twin stick Rangers available in earlier years but they were not FX4.

The blue seat inserts came with the 03 FX4 L2 and red inserts was also available depending on exterior color.
