Do all 02 FX4’s have the Torsen diff in them?

The tech article doesn’t make it clear.

In '02 they should as I recall. For '03 it's L2 only.

Seems I remember reading that there was a recall at some point due to carriers cracking or something like that. Some got replaced with new torsen LS units and some got open carriers. The one I bought used had an open carrier. If buying one, try to do some kind of test. Rotate pinion. If both wheels turn same direction, probably has the LS carrier. If they rotate opposite directions, probably open. Better yet, if possible, remove the cover and look.

Yikes. There was definitely a recall on the early 02's with manual transmissions but I didn't know about open carriers being installed sometimes as a substitute.

I am pretty sure all the 02 Torsen recalls were replaced with a new Torsen. I know mine was. They replaced the entire axle assembly including the brakes and drums.

As previously stated, not all FX4 axles had a limited slip. If you are going to buy one and expressly ask for one with an LSD, check it to make sure before you pay for it.

I’ve had junkyards try to pull a fast one on me in the past. I asked for an axle with 4.10 gearing in it and they gave me a 3.73. Then proceeded to try to tell me I didn’t need a 4.10 when I called them on it and proved it was not what I ordered.
