Barring a new front bumper anybody have any clever ideas for front recovery points on a '91?

0.5" flat bar drilled to use the existing bumper mounts and a hole cut in the bottom for hooks or straps? I'm not sure what aftermarket companies use to make theirs. As if they heat treat them after fabrication. Think a 2" or 3" X 0.5" bar dropping down from the frame to where you can clear the bumper and hook something to it.

I was thinking something beefy tying both frame rails together with hooks/loops on it.

It isn't for my truck obviously and I don't think he wants to loose the stock looking bumper. I think the airdam would have to go though.

The factory bumper brackets have proven less than resilient for recovery...

What about loops poking through the opening in the bumper like in the newer old model Rangers? Is there room to poke some in there? I think I know what truck you are speaking of. I don't remember how much room there was in the opening.

My credo
Giving my truck more money than it deserves.
I have experience in this! Please forgive the awful camera.

I used 2" square tube, 1/2" round stock and I think 3/8" bar stock. This was my first welding project and was more for welding practice and learning about how metal behaves. I am happy with boxing in the frame with the square tube and the triangular bar stock braces. The next hooks will require thicker round stock because I was able to bend them pulling someone else. I do not believe it is necessary to double up the square tube to drop the hooks. It clears the spoiler just fine if you make them long enough. This cost $30 in steel and used existing holes in the frame.

I should have just put one on the side like I was going to...on the passenger side you use the existing slot and drill one hole....

It puts the hook at an angle and allows the strap to cradle the bumper....just sux fishing the nuts in there taped to a wrench.

I used Chevy tow hooks on my '87... the kind you typically find on 88+ half ton and larger pickups. I mounted them to a piece of 4" angle iron (1/4 thick) that was attached to the bottom of the frame rails. I cut little slots in the air dam for the hooks to slide through. It's pretty stout and was pretty damn close to free.

I like the Chevy tow hooks because they mount flat and therefore discourage straps from slipping off.

I would have to remount it.....but you can get the gist I think ...

I have a three hole on my ranger...the lower bumper bolt hole and the rear most hole can accommodate it with just a notch of the air dam which you have to pull of course...then reinstall....
