Front End Weight

Ok, so I am doing a solid axle swap on my '00 ranger. I am to the point where I need to order front coil springs. The 98+ rangers didnt come with coil springs I need to know what the front end of the 98+ 4x4 4.0L weighs in order to get springs made. My truck cant move so I cant get it to a scale. Any help would be appreciated.

My guess is 3,600# total with 1,200# on the rear and 2,400# on the front. Plan for 1,200# per spring at whatever spring height you need.

Check your certification label. There should be a number labeled GVWRF. That is the sprung weight the front of the truck is rated to hold.

I know about the gvwr. Problem is it only tells you how heavy the truck will be at max capacity. I need to know how much it weighs normally. If I had spings built for max capacity all the time it would either sit too high or be a rough ride. Ive taken the truck to the scale before, it usually came out to 4480# with me and my girl. If I knew what the weight balance was I could get a good idea. Thanks for your help so far.

There are also ratings on the label for GVRWF and GVRWR. Front and Rear.


The GVRWF is the front axle weight, what is slung on the front axle. The GVRW is the loaded weight of the whole vehicle.

The cert on the door says 2850. I took my bro-in-law's 02 ranger 4.0 4x to the scale and the front read 2660 with both of us in it. He has the newer 4.0 I cant imagine his front end weighs 200 less with passengers than mine.

Mine both (2000 4x4 ext cabs) say 2710#'s but that's the rating, not the actual weight.

So go with his front end weight. It's the same truck, and the engine block is the same. The weight difference of the two 4.0s is negligible.

You didn't tell us you had that number. With no other information the Front rating is at least a starting point.

We had just gotten back from the scales when I posted that weight. His truck has the same gvwrf as mine.
