my buddys dad got a pit bought and they found a jeep grand cherokee, looks to be like a 95 style, its coil sprung front and rear, i can get it for free, so i was wondering if it would be worth my while? im assuming d30 front and 35 rear?
thanks

seems like some of them came with d44 rear axles too, i could be wrong. just look at the diff and you can probably tell. the front is most likely a d30

i will agree get rid of the d35 and just put a 8.8 but it seems like more are going with the d30 front. it really comes down to how hard you want to wheel it or if you just dont like the ttb.

get rid of the d35, and replace it with an 8.8 but lots of people are running d30's? what!?!

first of all, the 8.8 is a rear diff, where as the d35 on a ranger is front... they aren't interchangeable, and i don't actually know of one build running a d30, and you ask damn near anyone and they will say it's worth more as scrap steel than as a car part... not to mention the axle in the front of his truck is probably a d35 to begin with, and is bigger and stronger!

the d28, in my opinion, is still better than the d30... if for nothing more than you won't beat on it as much because you didn't just put 2000$ into it, and now think it's bulletproof

the purpose of sas's is to make the drivetrain significantly stronger, and to add wheel travel to the front... the difference in strength from the d28 to d30 is negligible

the d30 is plenty good-- just know your limits. i've seen d30's beat on and not had to many issues. the d30 can handle 33's-35's. i've seen it done, so don't start going in on how it wont.. i know a guy w/ a tj and d30, w/ 37's and wheels at the bottoms everyweekend w/ minor breakage. any axle will break tho. i'm doing a d30 swap, to run 33's on a dd/ww build. now if i was to build a dedicated trail rig-- i'd do tons and be done.

the d35 rear jeep axle is JUNK.. do an 8.8 rear, plus you're not gonna wanna deal w/ coil springing the rear. its a lot of work.

Rear D35 is garbage.

Front non-CAD D30 is OK but the ring/pinion starts to get weak in the deeper ratios.

The non-CAD D30s use the same joint as a TTB D35, it's a lot stronger than a D28.

I say do it. I have put my d30 through what a d28 couldn't handle and that is running cv shafts too. Love straight axles and will never go back.

As for the d35 rear...sell it. The 8.8 is better.

the best i can find is that the dana number for the light vehicle axles (the ones we are talking about) is directly relative to the amount of torque it's designed for... d28 is rated at 2800 ft/lbs where as a the d30 is 3000 ft/lbs of torque

So if I had a d30 with the small ujoints and another with the larger ones does that still make them equal. Same goes for a LP vs HP when it comes to the d30 or any other ones such as the d44.

it's ratings of the diff it's self, not your running gear... don't ask me the rest of your questions, ask dana holdings
