Need info on how to find and replace fuel pump. I stopped hearing the humming sound that it makes when you turn the key to the auxillary position, when my truck quit running at stoplight. Or some other explanation? Please, can anyone help, Thanks

First thing to check is the fuse for the pump. Located in the fuse box under the hood on the passenger side.

Best to test if fuel pumps are getting 12volt power first, 1988 will have TWO fuel pumps, lift pump in the gas tank, high pressure pump for fuel injection in the frame rail under drivers seat area, last year for this, 1989 and up just had high pressure pump in the gas tank

In passenger side of cab behind glove box on firewall will be the Inertia switch, fuel pump 12v power passes thru this switch

Can have 2 or 3 wires, and a RED button on the top
In an accident, i.e. sudden stop or roll over, the "inertia" change will cause RED button to pop up and disconnect power to fuel pump so it wouldn't pump gasoline out to feed a possible fire
If this button is UP then you found the problem, push it back down
But either way get a volt meter ground it and put other probe on either one of the inertia switch terminals
Watch meter and turn on the key
Should see 12volts for 2 seconds, then may see 5-8volts after that(monitor voltage)
Repeat key off and on a few times to confirm 12volts for 2seconds
If so then yes fuel pump(s) can be the issue

The high pressure pump will be easiest to check and replace if needed
As said, its in the frame rail under drivers seat area, has 2 fuel lines and 2 electrical wires
Pull it out
You can test it using the battery in engine bay, its 2 terminals should be marked + and -
Hook it up to see if it comes on
If not then replace it

This is the one you usually "hear" so probably the one thats failed
