Ac can now be seen, I've been dragged screaming and kicking into
the age of using a digital camera....

I can almost hear 35mm Pentax ME-Super crying...

Search for it.

Many times I've seen mention of Mercon-III and there's usually someone who chimes in
and says "There's no such thing".

Many times I've stepped in and said "there damned sure is!"

This was my having BOTH a working Digital camera, a bottle,
my very last Genuine Motorcraft bottle of Mercon-III
AND the inclination to do something with them at the
same time.

I wish I knew where my last bottle or Merkur 65W transmission oil is....

This was THE recommended oil for the T-K transmission... unfortunately
this stuff was $30 a quart!

Allan...

Your bottle there says Mercon.

Then next to that it says "also meets" and then "Dextron-III" right below it (Dextron III is a GM spec that happened to be similar to Mercon).

I see nothing here confirming anything about a "Mercon III" (nor did I hear anything about it's existence before, though this seems like disproving it's existence).

+1. That's the way I read it as well.

My credo
If you're not making mistakes, you're not learning.
I've always remembered seeing bottles like this actually?

Generally (as far as I know) somebody says "X" transmission takes "Dex/Merc III ATF", then some wiseguy who knows how Google works says "There's no such thing!!!" and proceeds to explain that Dexron and Mercon are Ford and GM and other fiddly bits of info.

Are there separate bottles for each type of fluid?, I imagine so. But I've ALWAYS seen them listed together as the picture above. Which is why so many people respond with "it takes Dexron/Mercon III"

Curiously though, I'm not sure why it's not the other way around, which then it would make sense, but, it isn't. No idea why.

Okay. And the stress is why? Kmart, Wally-world and other places used to carry this back in the 90's, not Motorcraft label, but, still Mercon. Just Mercon. Never mind. I just (sadly) realized that the people MOST likely to argue about the existence of this also recently (last 2-4 years) graduated from high school...

i see now:icon_thumby:

what there is beyond this is mercon v.

the dex 3 and 4 is covered under this and where the confusion comes in.

there is mercon, and mercon v.

v will work in anything.

theres assholes that think type f is some sort of special shit as well. i have had guys inform my obviously pathetic, ignorant ass, so they could save me.....from my retarded self....that running type f trans fluid...(even if it was new!!:icon_surprised:) through my injection pump or in my late model transmission would ruin it because of the additives....like they were abrasive or something:icon_rofl::icon_rofl:

the newer the fluid the slipperier it is due to the additives package to satisfy the shift and clutch needs/protocals....a newer trans will burn up because the older fluid isnt slimy enough....but a older trans will lover newer fluid.

my diesel injection pump sure as fawk will not wear out prematurely from it....the low lube new pump diesel yes....it will kill a injection pump....trans fluid no... never.

so you can blame this on manufacturer interchange.

I wouldn't say that.
Regular Mercon is still available as "Dex/Merc", seems there is a reason for it...

Merc V seems to be a bit too slippery for the M5OD's synchros (older ones at least). I've seen a couple examples become hard-shifting or "notchy" (I guess is the word) at some point after Merc V is put in. Switching back to regular Mercon also only seems to partially undo the damage. YMMV.
