Fm145 question

I’m looking to swap my a4ld for a manual. My trucks and 85 4x4 with a 2.8. As far as I have seen the 2.8 and 2.9 share the same bell housing and should fit up fine, s this true? Also is there a difference between a ranger and bronco 2 f145 or short bed vs long bed fm145?

only difference on any fm145 is the neutral switch on the top cover.

i would suggest using a m5od from a 2.9 or 4.0 application....unless you have already located one from a 2.8. the earlier tk style can be a different overall length..

the m5od is more common.

the fm 146 and m5od swap with the a4ld in regards to size..

The one I found is a 1989 fm146 out of a bronco II, my trucks a long bed standard cab so I’d assume that it would probably be to short?

Cab/wheelbase/frame length is irrelevant. It's the length of the transmission itself that matters so that it doesn't throw off your driveshaft lengths. That measurement does not change depending on what truck it came out of - it changes based on what model the transmission is. The FM146, M5OD and A4LD are all the same length (measured from the bellhousing to the tailhousing.) FM145's, TK's, C5's, etc are all different lengths.

Check the input shaft on that 146 for slop that would indicate a worn input bearing. If that is OK, see if the shifter is in good shape... if those two things check out it's fairly safe to use it.

if the e47a-lb is the one that you found, that is for a 1984 tk5 2.8

So would I just have to find new drive shafts that would fit or would It just not line up entirely?

Correct, you would need BOTH driveshafts that match your truck's wheelbase AND the transmission length if you use anything OTHER THAN a M5OD or FM-146.

The reason for that is if you use a shorter transmission, it moves your transfer case forward, thus making your rear driveshaft longer and the front one shorter.

Would anyone be able to point me towoards a tech sheet or tech library page for driveshafts lengths for 83/88 rangers? I’ve looked through the tech library and couldn’t find anything regarding length.
