I have a 87 ranger with the fm145 probably over due for a fluid change and I'd like to replace the pan gasket while I'm at it, having trouble finding a gl4 rated 80w-90 gear oil. Can anyone recommend a gear oil that will not harm the syncros?
When I brought the truck to the shop for ball joints the mechanic said he topped off the fluid in the trans, I went to loosen the fill plug and it wouldn't budge with a 24" breaker bar on there. Hit it with some penetrating oil but haven't tried it again since. If the penetrating oil doesn't help the situation not sure where to go from there?
Thanks in advance

The gym?

Nah, that sucker is in there. I'd say try some heat, but the case is aluminum, so don't use a torch.

You can also pull the shift tower off and fill through the top, you just need to be careful to not overfill it.

:icon_rofl: left myself open to that one. Yeah figured heat would be a bad idea.
Any recommendation for a 80w gear oil? Should I just throw some gl5 spec in there? Heard pennzoil synchromesh is good, but had trouble sourcing it locally..

I don't know where to get GL4. Don't use GL5. GL5 will eat the brass.

My credo
Do unto others then Split-probasti me et chognuisti me
which side is it on. The driver side has a flange bolt and the passenger side has a plug just like the drain plug and has SIL written underneath the plug. next to it is the revere light switch. Im thinking driver side because mine wont come off either. Either way 3.6 pints of 80 SAE gear oil.
