Flying for the first time since 2018

Im buying a 2007 ranger. And it’s 9 hours away. With gas prices on the rise. It made more sense to fly in. And drive home.

Anyone else flying these days? I booked directly with AA so hopefully no cancellation.

My wife flew awhile back. She spent like three days at airports between going there and coming home. She was pissed for a solid week.

I like a window seat behind the wing.

Seats are cheaperish with a decent ride.

Side perk if anything major happens outside there is a 50/50 chance I can watch.

Stay aft of the engine, in case there is an uncontained compressor failure you don't want to be beside it.

And just behind the wing is ideal, usually in a crash they break up just in front of the wing. The wing spars add a lot of strength right there. Of course there is usually a big fuel tank there too but it is what it is.

The plane we flew to Hawaii on for our honeymoon actually had an uncontained compressor failure like 3mo later. And then a year later another 777 had one and ours happened to be at the airport and continued on with the passengers from the second one after it turned around.

The truely enjoyable things about flying are:
~ airport+security+plane staff treat customers with so much respect; its not like they assume everyone is a terrorist with typhoid fever.
~ when something breaks on a plane (almost never), pilot just lands on any convenient spot, parks to the side & fixes the issue himself pronto.
~ seats are nice cushy recliners with all kinds of leg & arm room to stretch out & take a nap; plenty of room to use your PC\Tablet with the free WiFi.
~ the onboard food is just fabulous; the steak & lobster is always cooked to perfection, with the finest white\red as you prefer.
~ stewardess' are always kind & attentive & attractive; though I miss the old days when they wore HotPants & Heels.
~ airports are so easy to get in\out & ticket prices have dropped to next to nothing.

Flew from RVA to San Fran in August with United. Have to go to Texas in December plan to use them again. Absolutely 0 issues everything was on time or early. Had layovers but they were scheduled.

we flew from south texas to colorado springs in july. it wasn't bad. not like pre-9/11 days but not like right after 9/11 either. i grew up flying because my parents divorced when i was 4 or 5. my sister and i flew every summer to and from my dad's house. always unaccompanied with the stewerdesses taking care of us. even from oahu to the east coast.

when we flew in july, the bummer was that we got up for work at the normal 0445 and went to work all day, got off and jumped on the plane, lay over in dallas for an hour or hour and a half, than land in colorado springs really late and try to find a hotel. ended up going to bed at something like 0200.

but the flying was like all recent trips. no issues and not bad.

I only fly if I have to. I absolutely hate flying commercially. I’d rather deal with a long flight on a military transport than deal with all the BS that goes with flying on an airline.

I choose to drive most times instead. Even if it might cost more and take longer.

I keep getting ads for private jet rentals. It’s strange because I haven’t flown anywhere in a few years… since we went to Grand Cayman.

I haven't flown commercially since 2004 and don't know if I will again and if I do, I don't know where I will be going.

i would rather drive than fly. not because i dislike flying but i dislike being places with no wheels. i hate renting cars though so if i have time, i do drive. like christmas in the carolinas is always driven. my brothers and sister hate driving between texas and the carolinas but i have done it so much, i don't care. and the titan is way nicer to drive across the usa in than my karmann ghia, isuzu trooper2, 1500 chevy, old f150, civic, or anything else was that we have ever taken.

my family wastes the whole time off watching stupid ass football. what a waste of life. but thats what they do. when they turn the tv on, the wife and i get in the truck and leave. this year, since i know they will be wasting life watching football, we are going to jump in the truck and head up the coast to see what its like. she has never been north of north carolina and i have only been that way as a kid, or when the army sent me somewhere for training, which meant not a ton of free time to see the area

I was on a plane average about 3 times a week for about 5 years. Finally stopped traveling for work in early 2020.

Hated it. dealing with the BS of the airlines was miserable.

I was a service guy and had to drag a tool box all over the world so it was a big hassle. The sales guys didn't seems to mind as much, as long as you travel light there is a lot less hassle.


If I can drive I will, then it's all on my schedule and I can manage as I please instead of being herded around. Can stop for a pee, coffee, sandwich, whenever I please. Relax in my nice comfortable car.


I started traveling a bit more now, but 3/4 times a year vs 3/4 times a week. No toolbox now either, so not as bad.

Philadelphia is a really big American Hub, so I flew exclusively on American unless they didn't go where I needed. Like Idaho Falls, had to take United I think.
