Getting a bit mixed up in terminology here and trying to understand it so I can fix my truck.

Part of the exhaust came off at the flange which is right after the Y pipe. If travelling towards the back of the car it goes: Y pipe, flange, two boxes, then what I assume is the muffler and the tail pipe.

I’m looking to replace from the flange back, but whenever looking online it seems like “muffler” “cat back” and “cat converter” are all used interchangeably.

long story short, if it can understand what piece connects to that flange, I could buy it.

found a nice aftermarket muffle, but need a way to get it connected to the flange.

including some pics.

As I understand the terms...
Muffler; always after the cat.
Cat; catalytic convertor. One or more after the y-pipe. Some exhaust systems have a pre-cat or 2 in the y-pipe.
Cat back; replaces the exhaust tubes and muffler after the cat.

What I see in your pic is a cat.

Moved this to the exhaust forum. 2019+ Rangers don’t have y pipes.

One thing that helped me sort things out was to go to Rock Auto in the exhaust section for your truck and click on the info button for a part. That will pull up a page with pictures and a diagram giving some names and the part numbers. It helps you sort through what is what.

I do agree that the pictures you supplied appear to show a catalytic converter after the y pipes.

I haven't worked on one that new, but it should have that flange, the (2 piece) catalytic converter, then another flange that connects to the rest of the exhaust. Its after the second flange that you want to put a muffler.

The only way that I'm aware of to get the flange is on stock replacement parts. So if you want to take something out and keep the flange best to cut the existing parts. assuming of course they aren't too rusty to use.
