I’m trying to fix a problem with my sons 2001 Ford Ranger 4x4 with a 4.0 V6 and an automatic. It’ll run perfect one trip at any speed with zero problems at all, and then the next trip it’ll hardly want to leave the housing development.
When the problem happens it’s at maybe a quarter throw in the gas pedal and the truck hesitates and acts like it wants to die. If you ease the throttle/RPMs up you can slowly get up to speed. But you can’t put your foot in it at all or acts like it wants to die and has even seemed to have backfired through the engine once.
I grew up working on old Chevy naturally aspirated engines and these newer computer driven engines baffle me.
We’ve replaced the TPS, EGR, O2 sensors, Mass airflow sensor, spark plugs, wires, coil, ran injector cleaner through it. I have also heard of a possible plugged catalytic converter so we drove it on the freeway and got it good and hot (Vegas temps at night are still at 95 degrees right now) and then got off the freeway and immediately looked at the catalytic converter‘s and they weren’t glowing at all. There’s been no strong smell of gasoline. I’ve been leaning toward fuel pump or possibly injectors, I don’t know what else to check. Any help is greatly appreciated
