Got my ‘01 Edge 4x4 4.0 SOHC in August 2020 with 196k miles and I’m loving it so far. Its running well but has some minor things that need replaced. I wanna bring it back to great condition, so I’m trying to replace everything I can tell it might need, and do any preventative maintenance I can and learn a lot along the way.

To Do:
Rebuild trans - Work In Progress
Passenger side headlight
Diagnose evap dtc P0442
Cam chain tensioners
LED(?) dash lights
Replace jump seats with storage - Work In Progress
Speaker upgrade/Android auto head unit
Repaint Grille

Done:
Spark plugs and wires
Diff wheel position sensor
Shocks (Bilstein 4600)
Fluids
LSD added to the rear diff, bearings replaced
U-Joints (front and rear driveshafts)
Front driveshaft CV boot
CV Axles
Replaced a jump seat with a subwoofer mount

Maybe:
Realign/replace front bumper
Lay noise isolation carpet
Touch up paint
New wheels
Paint undercarriage

If anyone’s got any tips on any of those repairs, or some suggested preventative maintenance for this truck I’d really appreciate it. I saw that the timing chain is a failure point - I’m not sure if that’s been replaced, but is there anything I can to do prevent any damage to it?

Maybe down the line I’ll supercharge it, but that’d be much later on.

I’m really excited to get this truck back into tip top shape and become a part of the Ranger community. Thanks to everyone who has shared info already - it helped me a lot when choosing this truck, test driving it, etc.

I wanna bring it back to great condition, so I’m trying to replace everything I can tell it might need, and do any preventative maintenance I can and learn a lot along the way.

The List:
Passenger side headlight
Shocks (Bilstein 4600s)
Transmission and diff fluids
Diagnose evap dtc P0442
CV joints
Cam chain tensioners
LED(?) dash lights
Replace jump seats with storage
Lay noise isolation carpet
Realign the front bumper - maybe
Spark plugs and wires (already done)
Diff wheel position sensor (already done)

And the big one: rebuild the manual transmission - the syncronizers rattle and the shifter knob is real loose

If anyone’s got any tips on any of those repairs, or some suggested preventative maintenance for this truck I’d really appreciate it. I saw that the timing chain is a failure point - I’m not sure if that’s been replaced, but is there anything I can to do prevent any damage to it?

While you're at it. Change out the plastic thermostat housing that gets brittle with an aluminum one. You have to pull the housing anyway to get at the driver's side tensioner. It's right frigging there but tough to get at. the Passenger side is much easier. It's right there in the open looking through the wheel well.

Nice. I will do that. Watching a few YouTube videos, it looks like taking off the intake might make the tensioners a lot eadier, too. Although I’ll be working on it outside so it might be more difficult to keep crap from getting in there.

Yeah I’m really happy with the condition! The previous owner bought it off a kid who moved up here to Montana from Arizona, so the undercarriage is just as pretty!

The thought had crossed my mind but I have a sneaking suspicion there is a reason other than laziness as to why no one has remove the intake. One video I saw, they didn't prime the tensioners before installing them. It seemed that installation went a lot easier as a result. Whether that is a good idea or not may be another story since others are priming them first.

Nice truck! WOW I'm impressed you even matched the undercarriage to the paint job! Looks absolutely great - the lights go perfect with the thicc stance
For now I'm just worrying about the mechanics - but if I get a good chunk of cash down the road I'll definitely get the exterior touched up and the underside rust proofed.

Yeah... could be. I'll take a closer look when I get ready to do the swap and decide then I suppose.

OK update on the drivetrain! I found some more wrong with it :(

Gonna have to replace the U-Joints on the rear shaft as well as the pinion bearings and seal. HOPEFULLY that's all that's wrong with the rear diff. I ordered a Yukon kit and I'm gonna try to get that installed once I have the trans out and have some down time between figuring out what kit I need and when it ships in. Hopefully that'll be after the big snowstorm this weekend when it gets a little warmer here in MT next week.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
