im confused. i usually always go by what all data says but our tech thread on here contradicts what all data says. it seems as if one of the coils in the pictures is upside down. which one is right? i let a buddy help me do wires on my truck and i think he might have screwed me all up. i got a misfire with no PO codes. plugs are new and gapped and wires are new.

THE BIG PICTURE ON TOP IS FROM ALLDATA
THE SMALL PICTURE ON BOTTOM IS FROM THERANGERSTATION :icon_confused::icon_confused:

The one from TRS is correct for the overhead valve engine, I have used that diagram just this summer when I connected the wires wrong...

The one from All data looks the same as the one from the bottom... IF I recall correctly, there are three coils, and they send spark to two plugs simultaneously. the one from all data shows the coil pack upside down. other than that, it has the same sequence.

Now whether or not that is the firing order for your SOHC 4.0, I am not sure.

AJ

*edit* the one from TRS is also pictorally correct in its location vs the engine (a little too far forward, but other than that, if you look at the engine and the coil pack, that is how it is placed in the engine bay for the OHV 4.0. is the coil pack to the front and sideways on your 4.0?

i figured it out. the trs one looks like its upside down. must be for the ohv. she backfired like crazy when i tried it the trs way. lol. so im back to square one. it seems to run ok at idle and under "normal" conditions. it does buck occasionally and when i give it more than half throttle, it misfires like crazy!! the ck eng light flashes sometimes when im climbing a hill on the highway(which tells me its getting too much fuel and posiblally damaging the cats). the kicker is, the light doesnt stay on. i cant get any codes out of the motherf&*ker!! the misfire is driving me crazy!. i cleaned the MAF and EGR. today i will replace the DPFE and EGR just for shits and giggles. ANY SUGGESTIONS???

the firing order is on a SOHC #1 is on the pass. side front the coil pack is 1-2-3-4-6-5 i think the trs coil picture is incorrect 1 and 4 are next to each other on the coil i'm pretty sure but the #'s are on the coil pack

I didn't ask for your life story, just answer the question!
The TRS one is correct for the OHV.

The alldata one is correct for the SOHC.

(Obviously not in exact location, but they are correct in orientation and cyl id.)

FYI: they are batch fired. 1/5, 2/6, 3/4 fire simultaneously.

What kind of plugs did you use?? If you used anything but the double platinum's, it will do that. I used single platinums in mine, ran for about 2 day, then I had the same symptoms you have, idled great, light throttle was ok, mid to heavy throttle had a mis/dead cylinder. Swapped out for the DP's and ran like she should have...

Its referred to as "wasted spark" ignition. Batch fire is when the injectors fire simultaneously...
