RO reads as follows: Customer states engine will not start, backfired once.

Car: 2002 Focus SVT, 2.0L ZTech, manual trans.

Open hood to inspect timing belt and saw this (this pic is the engine bay in the state I found it). Points to the first person who can tell me what is amiss here. Once the right answer is posted I will post the close up shot.

It looks like the intake manifold is off of the engine?

Oil cap is on upside down :)

Intake looks odd from what I can see of it, but never seen this engine before

Yep, looks like the lower intake manifold blew off? Bet you don't see that one very often.

My only other guess is... Aint no gas in it... Mmmhmm.

I agree with RonD about the oil cap being upside down :icon_thumby:

Intake is screwed up somehow, either blown off or blown apart.

EDIT: Three posts in one minute has to be some sort of a record...

My credo

I'd say it looks like someone spliced in a MAF from another vehicle...but since I'm not familiar with the intake on them...it does look a bit far away from the head...thought it was some sensors on the firewall...

intake isnt even connected to the motor, looks like the owner tried doing some work and left it off and probably sucked something up inside it

The super short "no air" intake? As in the intake manifold is missing.

Random web picture of a close 2001 Ford Focus SE

There are a few correct responses, starting witch Mitch. The upper and lower intakes are connected by four boots that look like CAC tubes, all of them are undone.

The close up has gone missing from my photobucket and is on my computer at work.

He started it at home, drove it to the gas station across the street from where I work, when in for a soda and this happened when he came out.

Best I can figure is that the PCM's ignition coil driver crapped out during cranking and let at least two of the plugs fire before the intake valves closed because it has no spark an no trigger signal to the coils. When that happened the fuel mix fired through the intake instead of staying in the cylinder, pressurized the intake, and popped the 4 boots off.

From what I can see, the upper intake manifold is MISSING.

Don't know this engine, but there's a big hole between the air box and the engine...

...and that's what happens when you open a bunch of threads to read and then don't get to the one that's time-dependent until last :(

No, the intake is there, it is just hard to see because of where it sits now. If you look top-center there is an unhooked vac line. The line is resting on the upper intake.

Ok, here is the close up. You can see the upper intake just laying in the back of the engine bay still hanging off the rubber tube from the air box.

So is the intake just held on by those rubber sleeves? That seems kind of hokey to me.

Thought it was missing some kind of intake parts. Not familiar with the motor
