Today I mostly did some clean up on the back of the engine and in the bell housing. After taking a good look at the main seal again....

.....I don't think I'm going to replace it now. I've known for a long time about an oil leak in this engine, but it comes from much further forward of this seal. After laying upside down on my head yesterday to figure out how to get the clutch position switch out......This job has been a big fight all the way. A year and a half ago, I put in an engine and transmission in my '90 Integra that never belonged in that car, much later year. It was easier than this. I'm just going to put it back together as soon as I finish putting in the new clutch master cylinder. There's always next year.

After all this you're gonna gamble on a 24 year old seal!? Come on man....

Yeah, don't do that. Not to us, not to yourself.

What did you put for a motor&trans in the integra?

I'm done fighting this little truck. I need it for some chores, now. I can do it again in a year or two. I also hurt my neck, yesterday, so I'm done fighting with it for now.

Purchase this '90 for $500 with 125 hail dents. Put in a '96 B18c VTEC (a year and a half ago), Japanesse GSR version, gained 50hp....and the Y-80 trans with LSD. Hondata P72 ECU. I also put in ground control/eibach, tokico suspension and every moving part replaced including all bushings. I've replaced everything mechanical....and some more. Can get 75mph around 30mph corners without any instability or slip at all.

Cool little cars. Especially gsr swapped. I'd imagine those things are gaining in value pretty well these days.

I've spent $17k in parts on that car. The best parts available. I'd never get that for it, but I plan on driving it for the rest of my life. When you do this much to a car, it's yours.....did everything myself. The front of my hood is the height of my knee.

Your Ranger looks weird...
Blmpkn asked me a question, so I responded. I'll post a photo of the Ranger when I'm done with the trans. It looks pretty good too.

Well maybe, if I do nothing for a couple days I'll change my mind. Right now my neck hurts....but that main seal could give me some problems. I've had difficulty with big seals before.

Oh jeeze yeah.. it'll take a while for that thing to appreciate to the point where it's worth more than it was new 😅 labor of love for sure, I know all about it. I'm in the middle of building up an 83 caprice wagon into a wheel standing monster. Spent over 2x what I bought the car for just on its transmission lol.

As for your neck and the rear main seal... Definitely sleep on it. It might aggravate you to no end during its replacing... BUT.. it IS right there. If your luck is anything like mine.. if you don't change it.. itll eat itself sometime during the 3 weeks after you have it all back together and you'll seriously contemplate just setting the thing on fire.

Ok fellas, yeah.

I decided to use the screw method instead of my seal puller (at bottom). The way this crankshaft is configured I felt there was too much chance of scratching things up with the puller, but I did have to predrill to get the screws in. Yes, I looked for, found and carefully removed metal shavings from drilling into the seal. I used 1.5" roofing screws with rubber washer removed. Popped out with one of my small pry bars and a little bit of hand force. The new one is just like it, so it should last as long.

Thanks for the encouragement!

Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
Good job! I'm glad that you're doing the rear main seal. You're in there anyway, and now you won't have to worry about it for a long time.

Kinda funny, how a little motor has such a big crank seal.

Yep, my car with 1797cc is the same size.
