thats a shame about the oliver, dont see many of that vintage around here, maybe the sheet metal can be tapped back out & straightened. At least its not like the sheet metal modification I made way back in the day, I was around 10 and the log splitter (home made 3-point mount) was on the ford 4000, it was low on fuel and at that time the gas was stored in the back of the barn in a 55 gallon drum. Mom has me drive the tractor around the back of the barn to refuel. right as Im about to enter the back of the barn she yells “STOP” at me. Im startled (and 10 -remember) I dont even think about the clutch but stomp on a brake pedal. the left brake pedal. And of course you know what happens next. Hard left , into the barn doorway beam, dent in the middle of the hood, radiator pushed into the fan. Never did get the dent out and the long hood door to access fuel tank/radiator never worked right after that. Thanks mom!

took my 2000 out in the snow today, cleared the driveway & a path down the easment on the edge of the property. This tractor is better suited for snow work, the allis is sleeping for the winter, has the mower deck on it and will see plenty of summer use now that my yard size went up from .25 acre to 3.

Fun day of the favorite offseason pass time of cutting brush.

Cleaned up around the tile drain in the field, half the west windbreak and the road ditch in front of the house.

No pics but my brother and I changed the O rings on the draft control torsion bar on his Ford 9000 tractor... they're at the bottom of the transmission housing that is normally supposed to hold I think 17 gallons of tractor fluid, we drained 4 gallons... after a trip to Harbor Freight for a new 3/4" drive breaker bar so we could get the lug nuts and U bolts for the other style hub off to gain room we were somewhat in business... I got there at 10:30AM and we were to a stopping point at around 5PM, there were complications and interruptions not to mention the tools aren't at the barn... Judging by the amount of preload on the new O rings versus the old O rings it should retain more of it's fluids... I think he said he's added like 20 gallons to the thing over the last two years he's had it... after some transients moved in on part of the property then left before winter fully set in he has been mowing a lot of brush lately with the Ford 4600...

Dont you sometimes wish you dont hear about a possible good deal? Brenda just shows me a marketplace listing for a 47 8N. (ad says 9N but like many , its wrong, definitely a 8N) for 800 obo. Im so tempted to offer $500. says turns over but no spark. Tires look good, doesnt look like its sat out in the weather. I really dont need another tractor. But its still tempting. damn.
(2 days ago I saw a restored JD “50” with power steering I wouldnt mind adopting too-its much more though, darn near twice what I paid for my ford 2000 and the 50 isnt a 3-point tractor, Would love to add power steering to my 2000.)

It was optional on the 50 and there are a lot of 3pt kits floating around...

Anyway after looking at my forlorn Oliver for two months I popped the grille apart and tried to straighten it.

Maybe like 75% better, radiator cap door closes now anyway. Right side is a little "flat" on the curved bars but I didn't want to try too hard and krink them

Also, wife thought we needed ducks. I kinda thought we had enough birds already. So we compromised and got ducks.

A new addition here, picked up the coop last weekend (or is it a sedan since there are 4 doors? lol ). I canabilized a old unused push mower and made it more moveable, this weekend we got 6 birds and I made a makeshift pen out of a big box from work. Free eggs? idk, the $ already invested woulda bought a lot of eggs and it will be awhile before these critters start paying back. The little dog is so curious, always wanting to check on them. Real fresh nuggets in her eyes! My sister had chickens for 4-H back in the day, so im not really thrilled, been there/done that/couldnt go barefoot in the summer. But Bren has been wanting to do this for awhile. Guess it could be worse, cows horses or pigs would be worse to feed & clean up afterwards. I have considered invisible fence & goats though to avoid mowing the big yard I have now!

I seem to be having trouble growing anything, because it all gets eaten. If its not the bugs, its the critters. Mostly the critters....Rabbits, Gophers, Moles,Voles, Birds, Squirrels, Deer, Racoons you name it. They pillage everything before it even gets a chance to fruit. I have one raised garden bed completely enclosed in hardware cloth that is doing well, but its small.
How do Farmers manage to grow to harvest? tremendous amounts of pesticides and deterrents?

How did any of the fruits and veggies etc plants survive naturally for us to discover and domesticate?

I cant imagine watermelons or citrus trees growing naturally in the wild.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.

There used to be a lot more trees and plants and a lot fewer roads, parking lots and buildings. And much less interference from mankind in general.

Mankind is not the problem (for once), nature is. Critters.

As we take more space from them... it will surely get worse.

Not to mention... hunter numbers have been on a steady decline for decades. Not many trappers left either.
