My father has a 1979ish F250ish highboy sort of thing. He needs to do some transmission work to it, but we're unable to find a way to determine which transmission he has. It's running the 300 I6 engine, and we think it's either a T-18 or T-19 trans because it's an older 4 speed.

Is there a simple way to tell the two appart? And what are the main differences between the two?

Also, how hard (typically) is it to rebuild these, would it be more practical to try to find another one?
Thanks.

Oh, and here's a photo of his F250ish sort of thing with a scrap Ranger cab. Y'know, to relate to TRS and whatnot.

There are a couple ways to ID it as a T18 or T19. Most of them require getting inside the trans.

The T-18 didn't have a syncronized first gear. The T-19 did. The T-19 should also have casting numbers 13-09-065-911 or 13-09-065-905 on the case somewhere, if you can find them.

Check this page out.

That truck is on a highboy 77 and older frame. It may have the older transmission too. Where is reverse at? down by 4th or up by 3rd? If its up by 3rd its Definitely not a T19. A T19 wasn't used until the mid 80s. And they typically came behind a 6.9 diesel or a 460 engine. A T19 has a higher ratio first gear than a T18. Are you sure its a Borg Warner transmission. A truck of that vintage can also have a New Process transmission. The top on the Borg Warner is cast iron with a large tin nut that threads on the hold the shifter in. The New Process will have an aluminum top with a tin piece that pushes down and turns 1/4 turn to hold the shifter in.

I'll check the shifter when I head over there today. I thought I read somewhere that the NP435 trans wasn't put behind the inline engine, I can't seem to find it now so I may have been mistaken.

I'm mostly going by this page which has the T-18 in '65-'85 trucks and the T-19 in '75-'88 trucks. http://www.fordification.com/tech/transID-man.htm

That trucks kind of a cob-job. It's the highboy frame, dually rear out of one truck, cabs a '78 but it has the gas tank behind the seat so it points to either being a chassis cab or factory stakebody. The engine and transmission to my knowledge did not go with the rest of the truck, you can tell from the amount of wire splices and "modified" engine mounts. Then the front axle has drum brakes, and I think they stopped doing that in the late 60's.

Checked it out last night, couldn't find any numbers on it since it was dark out but it's definitely a NP435 transmission. I'm trying to determine if it would be easier to just find another (functioning) trans to swap in, then rebuild this one as a spare.

They are estranged and seeing other power-train assemblies, but still going to couples therapy.

my first truck was a 73 F250 high boy with 300-6/np435 combo.

so whats wrong with the trans? the np is a strong transmission typically. mine had 300k miles on it and only needed syncros replaced.
