Explorer V8 to I-beam power steering box?

I know what the swap thread in the suggests, just wondering if anyone has figured out a better or off the shelf, bolt-together solution for this.

Putting a '98 Explorer 5.0L into '86 Ranger 2WD. I definitely want to use the Explorer accessory drive and power steering pump. Not going to do any crazy conversions on the Ranger steering system either. Just want to make this as clean and simple of a swap as I can. I'd prefer to not have custom modified lines that require a tube shop to make, that said I don't mind using steel braided lines and adapters.

Is there a preferred year of steering box? Don't know how the steering boxes may have changed between '86 and '97, but I know a '97 box will bolt to the '86 frame and steering linkage. Going to replace steering box anyway so if there is a particular year that bolts up better than others I don't mind swapping that in at the same time.

Here is a link to a classic bronco site that has a good write up on the Explorer FEAD and there is a list of braided line and adapters needed to connect Explorer PS to steering box. 83 to 97 power steering boxes are the same.

What fitting does your explorer pump have ?


I have used the systems on box trucks with a massaged 4.0 line....it is 16mm o ring iirc.....or maybe 18.....


Compare them.

I could be remembering that wrong.

I looked at that article...it must be older.




On my ranger...I run the 95 gm pump to the 79 Ford box, I just cut and flare the lines to a coupler. 10 bux and some time.


I have all of the stuff to field build custom lines....from 15 years ago still in the box.....someday. For the hydro assist....someday..

For pressure side I used the following fittings: Lee Power Steering 40810, Russell 620411 -6 AN Endura Powerflex Power Steering 45 Degree Hose End, Russell by Edelbrock 620401 ENDURA HOSE END, # 6 - STRAIGHT, Russell 632600 Powerflex Stainless Steel -6AN Power Steering Hose - 3 Feet and this fitting in steering box for return line Brennan Industries 2115-06-06-B Brass Straight Tube Fitting, 3/8" Hose x 5/8"-18 Male Inverted Flare Swivel Straight Brass. Its probably cheaper to have a new pressure hose made than buying all these pieces, if you can find a shop to make one.

Thank you. I've looked st them for other things concerning the 5.0L swaps before, but kind of forgot about it. Namely EFIGuy's (<IIRC) instructions on converting the Explorer EFI to a standalone harness

Thank you! The last time I went into a local hydraulic shop to ask about having a custom hose made for a vehicle, they just looked at me funny and said we don't do that. Granted that was years ago, might get a different response now. Should check because I will need some custom A/C hoses made in the future for this and another project. I can lay them out and mock up the hoses, but will need someone to crimp it for me.
