For the time being since I can't find the headers for my v8 1999 ranger. Just how much horse power does the exhaust from an explorer lose compared to headers? I know the round ones are crap so would use the cast ones.

I am guessing 10hp. More important question, how do the headers fit if you ever find a set? And how hard is the starter to get out? And how do the plug wires fit up? What sort of clearance will you have under the truck at the collectors? Sometimes the 10-15hp is not worth all the other hassles with full length headers.

My credo
If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
It depends a lot on your engine and the RPM range it'll operate in. If it's a near stock engine or if it's built for low end torque the manifolds will have less effect than they would on a high RPM engine. I used manifolds with 66 Galaxie ID numbers on the 351 in my Ranger and I'm pretty sure some repro 289 Hipo manifolds would fit, too. Assuming you're going with single exhaust, the Explorer manifolds will let you use a stock Y pipe. I bought a 289 H pipe and made my Y pipe out of it, then built a 2 1/2" single system. The engine doesn't care how many tailpipes you have, it just cares how much it flows, a single 2 1/2" flows more than dual 2".
