So I have a custom exhaust on my truck with 2.25" pipe from the manifold back. Rather than the exhaust shop putting in some kind of taper pipe, they simply put a 2" pipe with a 2.25" pipe and welded up the gap right before the flange. Would it benefit me at all to have that tapered instead? I also had the thought of shorty headers that went from the head bore size to 2.25" outlet. Any advice is greatly appreciated

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I'm not an exhaust expert, but I'll give an opinion anyway.

Since the transition is Increasing pipe size, I would think the welded transition is fine as long as the weld sealed it properly. The size difference is very small. The ID of the 2.25" pipe is around 2.10 - 2.15", which is barely bigger than the 2.0" pipe. Even if the pipes are not perfectly centered, there is very little gap to fill. Furthermore, I can't see where a tapered transition would do much to improve exhaust flow as compared to the welded transition. Due to the pipe size increase, you are reducing exhaust gas velocity.

I watched a video awhile back that some magazine did about header sizing and if dimpling the tubes ( like for steering issues) would affect horsepower. At the end ALL the tubes were crushed in half and the horsepower dropped by about 5%. I don't think the transition you have will be bettered by a taper.

Agree with the 2 above posts.

My 02: Headers would be the best addition to your current exhaust, and from what I've read, there ain't many, if any companies that build them for our trucks:icon_confused:, so CUSTOM or HAND-MADE is bout the only option.:icon_welder:
