everything is wired but wont run

back in Dec. i couldn't figure out why my 2000 4.0 ranger wouldn't stop bucking... well it turned out i had a bad head. so i got this 4.0 from a 92 explorer (that my buddy had) and started the swap. turned out i had to use the 92 flex plate and had to mod the driver side engine mount bracket. also i used the 2000 upper and lower intake (with all new gaskets) so all the vacuum and sensors wound match up. i had to take the cam shaft pos sensor assembly out off the 2000 motor and put it in the 92 motor because it only had an oil pump drive gear thing instead of the csp sensor. anyway its now all put together and hooked up. and i will turn over but it seems like its trying to fire and wantiNG to run but it just wont. i know i got good fuel pressure.

any help would be highly appreciated since i need the truck on the road asap

When you put the plugwires back on, did you get them in the proper order?

When I did the upper and lower intake gaskets on my 97 4.0, I thoughtfully took a picture of how the plug wires were set. what I failed to realize until I started putting it all back together was that I cut off one side of the coilpack in my picture, so I had the one side that showed the wiring sequence was 1-2-3. so perfect right? the other side is probably 4-5-6. Wrong. it was 4-6-5 or something similar. and it would sound like it is trying to start, then it would buck and ping and die. Once I did correct the plug wires it ran. And I did note that it took a very long time to build up the fuel pressure in the rail, so if you are wired correctly, have someone hold the shrader valve open on the fuel rail while you turn the key to the run position a few times until you get fuel in the rail.

Or just squirt some quick start into the TB...if it is fuel it will fire up...if it is wiring you may get a backfire...

Had the same wiring issue on a 3.0...thought I had it wired properly and it would just crank...some idiot numbered the wires wrong and that just confused the crap out of me...but I was used to the simplicity of a 2.3...which I even messed up once or twice...

So check those wires again...probably something simple

thanks 97rangerxlt, i had it wrong and now it runs. but but it is sloking alittle kind looks like its coming from the or alound the exhaust maniflod but not sure. it has oil pressure. but why is it smoking??

Might be burning off some residual oil...take it out for a nice drive to get it warmed up and burn off any other oil. If it keeps smoking you might have a bad exhaust manifold or exhaust manifold gasket.

Do you really care where this was sent from?

I unscrewed the o2 sensors and It don't smoke no more it seemed to run a little better in gear. Still kinda Bucking like the old motor Did I think the cats got clogged and that's what blew the head gaskets. Sound logical?

If making a hole in the exhaust helped then something is restricted.

That's what I was thinking. You think if I put a two inlet, one outlet muffler like a flow master in place of the cat will fix the issue? Will it have good enough back pressure with a full lingth exhaust ? I don't have emotions in my county by the way... also all three of my o2sensors like burnt on the tip, (black, charecoreish in color) could that be part of the issue? On a 2000 4.0 how much do o2 sensors really effect it running wise?

Unfortunately, 2 things are going against you on removing the Cats...One is that it is a Federal law, so it doesn't matter if your county doesn't have emissions, and two, Rangers actually run better and get better gas mileage with the cats in place.

Might be able to get a generic cat for a few hundred bucks.

Hopefully when you replaced your engine, you solved the reason for the cat failing in the first place. If you can get one out of a junked Ranger that would be even cheaper, but I think most yards recycle those as they have quite a bit of value for the precious metals in them.

Oh wait, I am a trained professional.

The O2 sensors are very important on any fuel injected engine, and more so the later the year gets.

It can run without them, and the default mode on that year is better than it was on early EFI systems, but they are still critical engine management inputs. It will not reach optimum running conditions or peak fuel economy without them.


You need to replace the cats with cats (don't be a dumbass and try to use a muffler).
