just wanting to verify that my 4.0 v6 from my 1994 ranger will work in my 1984 ranger that came stock with the 2.8 v6. will the 4.0 work with the transmission from the 2.8 so I can make it 4wd without having to buy a bunch more stuff.

Yes, the 2.8 2.9 & 4L bell housing pattern is the same.

ignore the thread title and the stuff above and below, it is unrelated... but here is just about almost all the info you could ever want on a 2.8/2.9 to a 4.0 swap compliments of the site owner himself Jim :)

The long and the short, engine PLUS engine harness as long as you stay in the same year - since you are doing different generations it gets a lot harder (dash, etc) - last link is the most similar I think from a quick skim.

edit: BTW, that search was 2.9 not 2.8 as I am sure you saw, but the 2.8 and 2.9 share nothing in common I understand. The 4.0 is an evolution of the 2.9 but share so little that the swap is basically the same 2.8 or 2.9 to 4.0... might do a google search for "2.8 to 4.0 swap site:therangerstation.com" to scare up any specific articles for that situation if you decide to proceed given the difficulty.

The 2.8/2.9 are interchangable as far as mounting. Yes there are some differences (EFI, timing chain vs gear, etc) but the blocks are the same.
